another fine mess

Good afternoon: Today, while mowing the ditch in front of our property, I pushed the clutch pedal down on my 1958 Cub, and the tractor kept moving right along. Clutch did not disengage, wheels and mower still had power. Ignition switch stopped everything. This Cub is a 1958 LOBOY with a 42 inch Woods belly mower. I hope a Cub expert can offer suggestions as to how I can fix this tractor's clutch; there is no external linkage, and the belly mower is in the way so I can't look at the release bearing. Thanks for any assistance!

The clutch linkage is likely at fault. See attached diagram). Almost any part shown but the pedal could be at fault. Were it mine, I would shut of the PTO then lift the mower as high as possible, then put it in first and start it in gear driving it to where I could roll it for a split. Be safe. Jim

Most likely some part has come unhooked or broke
belonging to the internal clutch control linkage.
Removing the clutch access plate number 17 in the link
will give you some access to the clutch area. I am not
familiar with those tractors but I think there is a hole in
the back end of the clutch housing right in front of
where it bolts to the transmission. I think you need a
mirror to look forward to see if something
disconnected up by the pedal shaft. Those tractors
originally have a carbon style throw out bearing. There
is a possibility that the carbon wear surface that push
on the clutch pressure plate fingers broke to pieces
and fell away. However, I believe if this happened you
would have reported a noise and vibration through the
pedal when you pushed it down.
Edit: I am not a copycat, Jim was posting while I was typing.

First off, check the obvious things you CAN see externally. Two things in that category:
- Check the adjustment cap screw at the base of the pedal. It could have loosened, losing your clutch adjustment.
- Check the cross pin that is high on the bell housing that it is still in place. If it came out, the linkage for the throw out bearing carrier could have fallen loose.

When it turns out to be nether of them, time to look in the hand hole on the bottom of the bell housing. If you can't get your head under it to look, use a mirror or hold your cell phone up to the hole and take some pictures. You will most likely find the graphite puck has fallen apart. Time for a split.

You may have had a finger come loose on the pressure plate, if there is still some pressure on the
pedal. Ive only had that happen once on a Cub, but it can happen.

Broken finger on clutch, My Cub has a broken finger where the pin goes through the lever. I have the new kit sitting there but it does not want to install it's self. One of these day I guess I'm going to have to get busy and do a clutch job.

Happened suddenly with no crazy racket?
Possibly the bolt holding the adjustment
on the clutch pedal slipped.... That's
your easiest fix....

Good morning: I am replying to Mr. Janicholson, because my original post has disappeared. In any event, the clutch pedal did not seem to feel different when it quit working. To get the tractor back to the barn, I shut off the engine, put trans in first gear, then used the starter to start up. As expected, the tractor moved immediately, and I drove it to the barn (a few hundred yards). I like the idea of using my cell phone camera to see what is inside the clutch throwout area. The belly mower prevents me from getting under the tractor to look though the access hole. If worst comes to worst, there is a capable mechanic about 3 miles from me, and another about 10 miles. They both have overhead hoists, etc. so either one can split a tractor. We shall see in a day or two........

Thanks for responses!
