Another tractor fatality

Here's another story on tractor safety. This fatality took place a couple miles from me. The tractor is (was) one of the new McCormicks.

The 20 year old kid slid off the road in his car and took down a power line, the night before Thanksgiving . He 'borrowed' a tractor to drag it back onto the road and managed to get the tractor tangled in the downed power lines. The tractor caught fire from the live power lines and he was electrocuted when he tried to jump free.

Seems the 20 year old "borrowed" two tractors. Damaged one and destroyed the other while killing himself, and left a 4 year old daughter without a father. It's a shame when a young person dies, but some leave a bigger hole in the gene pool than others.

If he hit the pole hard enough to have broken it off, he needed to get the authoritys out there anyways. Seems he was far from an honest guy to me. I think he had plans of pulling his car out which must have been pretty well totalled, and then just taking off.

A tragic event but this young man must not have quite been all with it.You are never to leave a vehicle if you hit a power pole.Lots get electrocuted exiting the car.There couldnt have been much left to pull out.

Borrowing tractors without permission happens around here but its wrong.Alot of people have no commom sense and heres proof.

I have to agree with some of the others, that was just a plain stupid thing to do. Its odd that stupidity kills so easily. You don't mess with power lines! You also don't go get tractors without permission. I know we all do things that are stupid, hopefully this story will reach enough people that something like this will not happen again.

You say he probably wasn't quite with it. 90% of these kind of "not with it" things that happen, happen because of the overindulgence of the "accepted drug" ALCHAHOL. That is also why 90% of them DON'T call for help and try to FIX the problem BEFORE the athorities get there. Don't expect them to think straight , because they aren't! 90% of all violent crimes are comitted while under the influence of some drug. Drugs and alchahol destroy the concience and that's what keeps most people straight.

First let me say, I feel sorry for his kid and family. We were all 20 and bullit proof at one time or another and by the grace of God we lived to tell about it.

Ok, now who wants to start a bet on how much his family is going to sue the farmer for. He left 2 tractors not locked up with the keys in them, he has to be at fault here some how. My money is on wrongfull death and neglegence, they"l ask for 2 mil or more to start with.

They'll sue. That gets me so mad, some IDIOT gets killed STEALING a tractor, now the farmer is at fault. There are so many things wrong with that. Surely thats not right, if you are stelaing something and get hurt you can sue.

Gee, you could break into a real rough looking buissness and

1) if caught, struggle, get hurt, then sue for a ton. Bail yourself out with lawsuit money.

2) Take anything you can carry.

Either way the place suffers and you prosper. There was a time when you could be shot for that.

A 20 year old is not a 'kid'.There are plenty of 20 year olds and younger making decisions every day in the military that mean life or death for them,their fellow soliders and the rest of us here in the United States.These 'kids' that are doing stupid things here need to quit acting like
young children and start being responsible young adults.

I may have missread the story I thought is said he "got" the tractors from a farmer. If don't know any farmer who would loan a kid a second tractor after the tore the trany out of the first one. I have pulled a few people out of a ditch before but never just told them to take all the tractors they need.

Just a word of advice to every one, if you help some one out by pulling them out of a ditch, hand them one end of the chain and have them hook it to thier ride. Buddy of mine has a wrecker and body shop buissnes. He told me that years ago and it paid off a few years ago for me try'n to be nice.

When someone needs pulled out I dont loan a tractor,I go with it.No farmer would loan him a tractor and let him tear it up,and then loan him another one.I'd say that they were borrowed without permission.Its happened more than once in my area.

It is tragic but the story doesn't go into a lot of detail. If it happened close to his home, maybe he borrowed a tractor from one of his neighbors with consent. Maybe his own? It sounds like he was in a catch 22 situation. If he stayed in the tractor he would have burned to death so he decided to jump out but forgot to jump clear of the tractor when exiting. If he was still in the tractor and wasn't burned, he would have been eletrocuted anyway when the tires burned up. Feel sorry for the daughter especially.

I don't have much more information on the accident. The tractors came from a barn that was near the road. The farmer does not live there and was probably not even aware the tractor was borrowed. Just like most farmers, it sounds like he left the keys in the tractor.

It sounds an little harsh but I feel sorry for the farmer and the daughter, but not the dead guy.

Not much out on Ball road last time i was there I also live a few miles from there in Palmyra. I know John Paige who owns Paige Equipment live off of there. If you read the Times That Marion area is just full of punk kids always in trouble doing drug stealing i thing most of the parents in that area just spoiled these kids and they just keep getting in trouble and about 99% of them are useless as a employer i Know god help us in 20 years hope i'm not around.

No, there isn't much on Ball Road. The tractors came from the corner of Ball and VanCruyningham Roads. I would agree with the punk kid description. For the size town Marion is, there have been a lot of fatalities recently of people 18-25.

We know enough to know that stealing 2 tractors and trearing the tranny out of one of them is CRIMINAL behavior as well as stupidity.Don't do the crime if you can't stand the consquences.Lucky for everyone around there they didn't get killed by him driving so as to run out of the road in the 1st place.Also its a crime not to report an accident in the 1st place.

You are right, I took an ag law class in college.
The fact that the tractors were visable, with keys in them, makes them an "attractive nuisance". The tractor owner will almost certainly be sued. I know there are some honest, good lawyers, but 90% are crooks and are going to ruin this country.

A lot of Big Drug bust in Wayne county last couple of months. I came from Webster i think there is less crime there now then out here but i've been in Palmyra 20 years and lost track of what is going on in Webster.
