Anybody know what this is?

Picked up this piece of highway equipment a couple weeks ago, but haven't been able to identify it. Its powered by a Continental FA162 Red Seal power unit, complete with the power unit sheet metal. It has a 4 speed transmission & a transfer case used to provide high-low range (no front drive). Looks like it probably had something that tilted mounted on the right side, maybe a mower or sprayer? There's not PTO, but it did originally have live hydraulics. The rear springs have been doubled, and it looks like there was something heavy (a tank?) mounted behind the drivers seat.

Would appreciate any ideas. There are a couple more pictures in stuck & troubled.

Looks to be some sort of aircraft tug. Any military paint show up underneath the yellow?

Thanks, but its definitely not an aircraft tug - would be geared waaay to high, plus there's no provision for attaching a tow bar. I'm familiar with aircraft tugs, I've worked for a major aerospace company for almost 25 years.

An aircraft tug was my first thought when I originally saw pictures, but when I got a look up close there's no way. Its some sort of highway equipment, just trying to figure out what.

How about a sweeper? Live hydraulics could drive the brush motor. Looks pretty light to be a grader or earth mover of any type.

If it's a Red Seal, are you sure it's a 162 and not an F163 like used in welders. The F163's had red seal cast in the exhaust manifold. I didn't think the 162's were referred to as red seal. Maybe it was some kind of tractor hooked to a mower for doing ditches or something? Dave

looksa kinda like a kansas Hiway mower it would have had a sickle bar mounted under the belly a guy that comes to our show has one but it has a flathead ford motor in it

Could it be an old airport bagage hauler? They put a series of wagons behind them. I'm thinking that's what it is but it's quite old from the 40's/50's.

It looks like a Worthington golf course tractor, but they had dually tires on the back, I don't know about the gearing, but it was pretty fast. Also might be a drop hammer vehicle or guard rail post pounder vehicle.

My brother has one very similar. It has a tag on it and was built by the Topeka highway mower company. His had a hydraulic driven sickle mower mounted on it. Some of the components are Jeep. Ron
