Anyone carry a multi tool ?

Ive had one in the past. A Gerber suspension. I liked it, but
after a few uses the one side of the pliers broke completely
off. Not hard use as I was cutting thin wire. Bought another of
the same model and same thing happened. I figured the first
one had a defect. I guess not. I then bought a Leathernan.
Tools were all inside and I hated it. I gave it to my brother.
That was years ago. I see now Leatherman had what is
called their Wave plus. It seems to have everything I want
and knives, saw, and file are outside which doesnt require
opening the tool to get to them. Im always looking for pliers,
wire cutters, or a screwdriver. I think this setup would work
good. Anyone with any experience with them ?

I carry a Wave Plus. It cost at 100.00. I have had great experience with it. The knives are outside, the tools are inside, but easily accessible. Diamond file/sharpener built in. It keeps my barlow pattern knife sharp. Would not cut piano wire with it, but welder wire is a easy and clean. Jim

Been carrying a Leatherman side clip for over 20 years. Have sent it back to Leatherman twice for repairs. Feel lost without it.

I have a Wave+, and I like it a lot.

My first Leatherman was a Blast (no longer made) that I picked up at a garage sale for ten bucks. I carried it for two or three years, but I dropped it too many times and broke one of the lock buttons. I didn't try to get it fixed under warranty, since I bought it second-hand. I fixed it once with my TIG welder but it broke again and I replaced it with the Wave+.

My only complaint with the Wave+ is its Phillips blade. The Blast has a proper screwdriver, while the Wave+ uses a proprietary replaceable bit that isn't quite as practical as the one on the Blast. Other than that, the Wave+ is well worth its hundred dollar price tag. I don't think any of the cheaper tools have scissors, which is one the most useful tools on a Leatherman. The knife and saw blades on the Wave+ don't require you to open the tool; I still keep a jackknife in my pocket out of habit so I don't use the knife blades on the Leatherman that often.

300jk,

I have this one. I no longer carry it now, bit did years back. It's a super tool and it is sharp!

It's an excellent tool and well made.
I think the warranty now is 20 years? Used to be lifetime.

You can check on the interwebs to see what they have now.

A second the do not cut piano wire with it,

Guido.

Plus the wave is guaranteed.. I've had one tool brake, went to Leatherman web site, filled out a form, mailed all to Leatherman. In a few weeks got a new Leatherman Wave plus a case.. No problems since; great service; great tool .

I don't carry tools on me personally. No pliers, no pocket knife, nothing. But I do carry appropriate tools that I may need in my vehicles/tractors.
The cheapy multi-tools that I have ever been around, weren't worth haven. Throwing them away always crossed my mind while trying to use them.
After working 4 years as a mechanic, I know what I need for tools before I tear into something. So, I don't use adjustable, multi use tools hardly at all. I'm not one of them that has to come back from the tool box with a whole hand full of wrenches because I don't know what size I need.

I carry a Leatherman rebar. Used to carry a Wave but pinched my hand too many times. Been carrying one for as long as I can remember . First one was the original Leatherman. Don't think there is a day go by that I don't use it for something.

300 super tool I use it about ten times a day . The sheath they come with is completely garbage my saddle maker is building me a real sheath

I have carried a Leatherman Wave for 15 plus years. I actually have three; one for my nice jeans, one for my work pants and a third for my farm jeans. Lifetime warranty so I send them in about once a year to be sharpened and the pliers hinge tightened. Love it !

I have one. Can't tell you what brand it is. It is in my box of supplies for mowing the cemetery. I use it mostly for cutting trimmer string.

The screwdrivers come in handy. Once I got too close to the evergreens and pulled a wire off. I used the point nose poker to plug it back in.

I also carry a 10 pc Craftsman socket set I bought last spring on sale for ten bucks.

I worked with power system. The last thing you wanted. Was metal hanging off your body.I have seen too many with burn marks.

Had one of the original Gerbers years ago, parked it for a Leatherman, forgot which model, have a Leatherman Wingman now. I've broken the very first serrated tip of of the needle nose pliers, but still using it. I feel lost without it, a Kershaw O SoSweet knife a , a 6 pocket ruler and a pocket screwdriver when I go to work. Just the way I've done for years.

I just sent my old Wave in and they sent me a new one. The new one has hardened cutting edges screwed on to the pliers. Great idea as the old style would burr and make opening them hard.

last company I worked for ( a pipefitting/mill maintenance outfit) bought a big ole abandoned fab shop. over head cranes and such. Been abandoned for years and the crackheads had stripped every inch of copper wire and plumbing they could find... even right up to the terminals on the crane relays. What the didn't steal they destroyed. After they cut the wiring loose from the 1000w high bay lights they just let them crash 60' to the floor We replaced some lighting off a 10' step ladder on top of a 25 ton crane.. moving the crane with a cable and truck mounted winch. Osha was no where around !!!

There was literally 1" of dust/dirt/grease on everything..We found out quickly that the concrete floor wasn't complete after we shoveled all the dirt out of the building.

Me and my workbuddy were tasked with securing the building..moving in equipment and conexes and trying to get some electricity going.. My main tool was a Leatherman wave and it served me well. I lost it at least three times in the dirt, dropped it twice from the crane and it never failed. I know I used every single attachment it had at least once. Still got the old battered thing in my knife drawer. Haven't used it since I retired... my home shop tools are close now !! I think it's the best overall multi-tool you can find for the money.

I have a Victorinox Spirit multitool on my belt just about everywhere I go and use it often. If I know I'll be needing a pliers or screwdriver for a job I'll plan ahead and have real tools with me but for stuff that comes up unexpectedly (which seems to happen a lot) it has always served me well. I like its heavy-duty but relatively thin profile which allows the sheath to be slim and unobtrusive. And, its fit-and-finish and overall quality are top-notch.

I totally understand that. I work around mostly dirt and stone. I understand your concern. I also wear a metal wedding band. All of our mechanics at work wear a rubber wedding band. Im not a mechanic, and rarely work on equipment at work. At the farm I work on everything. A metal band is probably not the best idea I agree.

I retired mine like that after toting it around for maybe 30 years. I think that is the best one they ever made. Now just carry a knife.

I have a Leatherman MICRA, goes on a ring on my key ring. Small but handy. Has a knife blade, scissors, couple of screwdrivers, tweezers, nail file, and maybe a couple I am forgetting. Small but always with me if I am out and surprised at how often I use it.
