artifacts?

anyone ever turn up arrowheads/stone implements / tools in there plowing?

Always loved searching for this stuff. to pick one up off the surface, to hold it for the first time since primative days gone by, is something to consider.

Who made it? What was that person like? How many years ago was this lost?

Very neat. maybe too deep for some. Some properties, especially on rivers ,contain so many that its just common occurence to find em'.

Wish I had a site here close to me in Texas to explore.. Surface finds mind you! I dont dig...leave that for the archeologists.

I found a lot of things out in th fields over the years.

A $1 bill - middle of the farm, very far from any roads.

Couple pages from a dirtier than normal dirty magazine - I was a teenager at the time, that was - different.

Some big iron pieces - dad says oh, so that's where they fell off! Was some heavy metal beams dad used for weight on the disk 2 decades earlier.

A love letter from a classmate of mine to some guy.

A number of old tools - pliers, wrenches, etc.

Some old pottery bits that show up in one area - dad said that was where one of the settlers of the area located, was his homestead. Very neat, like you say, you wonder the history, how much work there was....

This doesn't count the many things I found in the road ditch - all in the field.

The thing that was very interesting for me was when picking rocks as a little kid, found a 1/2 an oxen shoe. Took some explaining from dad as why it is only a 1/2 of a horseshoe, still have it, just sticks out for me.

ive turned up several fossils over the years, thats pretty cool.used to find a arrowhead now and then but the only thing ive found lately is half a stone axe head.scrap iron grows around here,especially horseshoes.and crap that causes flats of course!LOL worst thing is railroad spikes,and the plates that lay under the rails,have a rr that cuts diagonal across one place and those folks must go out of their way to throw it in the pasture.I bet ive picked up 5000 spikes over the years,have 25-30 in back the pickup now.when i get a bucket full i take them to a neighbor who's a blacksmith and he makes knives and things out of them.

i found quite a few arrowheads and spear points, and one axehead, i think. my brother collected them. early spring in a fall plowed field seemed like the best time to find them. havent seen any yet on my present farm, but it doesnt see a moldboard plow.

nothing yet, I am always looking for a hammer head, local indians told me that when tribes moved they often left the hammers behind as they could make another later and it was less weight to haul.

A few summers ago, a friend of my dad dug into a sand bank on his property with a back hoe and out tumbled a human skeleton! He called the police, they came out and called the BIA, they sent out some local tribal representives.
Turns out it was actually a burial mound, about 300 years old, dated by the artifacts present. Local tribe (Ojibwa) came out, did a reburial ceremony and set up a little placard.
He found another spot to dig sand.
His family has quite a collection of Arrow points and other artifacts that have turned up in their fields over the years.
Back in the 1960's my Grandfather dug up a Mastodon skeleton while digging a pond and my uncles used the rib bones for golf clubs and for cleaning the tracks on the dragline crane and their bulldozer until they broke them. Last time I was up north they still had the teeth and some vertebra in the house.

oh man... in a way, its a tough thing dealing with the burial mounds... in an other, how cool.. real history here.. I for one would not disturb a known burial site.. but I totaly enjoy finding relics on old forgotten fields and wooded areas, river banks and such. love th stuff and revere it totally
