aux. transmission

I have a 1948 8N, 12 volt with front distributer. It has an auxillary transmission that I am not familiar with. I don't know anything about them and was hoping for some more information. The handle has the "dog-leg" bend that I have seen referred to in other posts. It goes forward and backwards, but I can't get it to pull out. Should all of the aux. transmissions pull out? How many positions should it have? It is pretty warn and sloppy and I can't tell if it has 4 positions or only 3. Thanks.

Steve.......the 2-speed OverDrive Sherman has a common "L" shaped shifter handle. The more desireable 3-speed Combo Sherman has a dogleg "S" shaped shifter handle just as you describe. It shifts in a reversed "h" pattern. With 3-speed shifter in neutral, pull out to the side about 1-in and then back towards the driver. (clutch pedal stomped upon) The "L" and the "S" shifter handles are incompatable. .......Dell
