I have a B F Avery, model R, that I changed from 6 volts to 12 volts. At present, I have 14.4 volts going to the switch . I put a 12 volt resister between the battery and the switch to reduce voltage, but the tractor will not turn over. The voltage is reduced too much. Any suggestions on what to do?

Remove the resistor. If you converted it to 12 volts, 14.4 volts is a common charging voltage, you do not need a resistor ahead of the switch dropping voltage. The only place you would need a "ballast" resistor is in the ignition wire just before the coil, only IF you re-used the 6-volt coil rather than installing a 'No External Resistor Required" actual 12-volt coil.

Just to clarify things a bit. As Jim said only the power to the ignition needs to have the voltage reduced per the requirements he laid out. All other items like switches ect. that were 6 volt can carry 12 volts just fine. I assume you are using a solenoid to engage the starter, as mentioned the voltage is just being dropped to much by the resistor to engage it properly. The charging system is definitely dependent on the correct voltage so a description of that would be good so we know it will work with your setup, I can only assume it is an alternator. If you have or want working lights on the tractor the bulbs will need changed to 12 volt.
