B mag question

Got a B with a mag (WICO)with no kill wire. What was JD's plan for shut down? We have choked it, but when its cold she like's that, we have also popped the clutch. There is no wire or a hole for the wire in the mag housing.
Any thoughts?

Depending on the carb and its idle and stop post and vertical spring position/adjustment on some you could pull the throttle all the way back and that would kill the engine.

DO NOT KILL IT BY CHOKING that washes oil off the cylinders and rings.

Ive found they re start better if you turn the gas off and let them eventually die and I prefer that even if a kill switch is available.

On Wico X Mags an option was the kill stud which if grounded killed the spark but thats not available on most Wico C Mags Ive seen.

Glad you asked....the late model gas B's were designed with a shut down...throttle all the way back and you're dead....now having said that folks got aggravated at the shutdown feature as they would accidently shut down...guess when little Johnny driving so a lot of people got the ideal to bend the stop peg a little forward to prevent this...good ideal? maybe bad ideal...you lost the safety feature and I guarantee you these old beast's governor will come from a slow idle to full throttle...many people have been hurt by this with tractor in a pinch....I've always had a kill switch but about the time your beginning to turn over or rare up it's rather difficult to reach over for the kill switch. You can bend peg back and the butterfly will block the throat of the carburator. Now on the older all fuel they couldn't dare have that happen because of fouling and they had bypass fuel supply channel or throat that prevented that...most people opened the drain port and let them run out of gas...there was no safety shut down...I like the throttle shut down but it is a little tricky to get the right feel for use..

I have seen the little vertical stop post on some carbs bent back so the throttle will close off a bit more just enough to kill the engine. Like you I like to be able to instantly kill the engine in case of an emergency.

Even if a person can kill it with the throttle or a switch, if its not an emergency situation I still prefer (and will continue the practice) to shut the gas off

Fun chat, take care yall

The John Deere h book sais to run it out of gas/fuel stalling engine will let any unburnt fuel to vaporize and make it harder to start next go around.

You don't say what year your B is but here is a page out of the 1937 JD Model B Operating Manual. Get the manuals for your tractor and you'll learn a lot.

The all fuel tractors were shut down by switch back on gasoline then shutting the fuel bowl off. If you allowed it to run out of fuel or stall while using tractor fuel then you would foul the plugs and it would be very difficult to start...you would then have to clean the plugs...then start on gas....I remember running these and they didn't want to operate good till you got over 180 degrees and I know you couldn't get one to fire up on tractor fuel as it was such low grade....

A kill wire post can be added to the Wico C and Wico X.
A Wico kit with the proper stud post, insulators, and wire is available.
For X magnetos, the post location is just behind the cap and can be on either side.
For C magnetos, the post location is behind the main cap, near the top of the case.
We keep them in stock, or send your mag for installation.
