B manifold replacement

Hi, finally got my B, 39 hand start that hasn't run in 30 years. I got it running and found a nasty leak at the manifold (new one on it's way). Just looking at it there is no way the studs can be reused and all will most likely break taking it off. My question is... are there any tricks that would help, should I remove the head for example and can I use bolts instead of studs? What is the best way to get the studs out of the head? Thanks for taking a look.

I think on those you want the correct John Deere studs. They have a fatter thread than a standard stud or bolt. Others on here would know more about this than I do but I think there was another thread on this a while back. On my unstyled A that I just restored I found some used studs and used a thread sealer on them, I can't remember exactly what though.

Hi,
I've used both over the years. If you have to change the manifold I usually just pull the head. It's just about the easiest way because on some models you can't get the manifold out without pulling the fan shaft and that's not easy either. Your probably going to break off a stud or two and have to drill them out. This is not an easy job. If you use bolts be sure to use a good thread sealer on them. Studs do a better job but are pricey, but as I said I've used both with success. Good Luck!

Heat is your friend in this situation. I used a torch and a candle. Heat the stud area good and put the candle on it. Candle wax will wick in between stud and nut and will help move it and not break.
Hope this helps

Thanks for the help folks. I was looking at the fan shaft and it seems to be easier to just pull the head. That way I can swear at it while it's on a bench anyway.

When you pull the head, check the pushrod tubes and replace if necessary at this time. A lot easier off the tractor...

You need to pull head any way.By the time you get the manifold off there will be so much trash in the head you'll never get it out.All the rust and stuff will be down in the valves.Ron
