Hi guys, Seasons Greetings. I have a B question for the deere guys out here. A friend has a B that he
had me look at and it seem to be backfiring into
the crankcase. My question is is this common? I suspect the rings and cylinder are not so great.
Also can the stock jug be bored out? or would we be better off to buy a power block. Its just a firewood tractor, light use around the farm. Thanks. Ryan K

Carb adjustment, sticky valves, burnt valves just a few problems he might have.Check the compression. The cylinders can be bored. Many different sizes available. A power Block would be very expensive and overkill for a firewood tractor.

What year B is it?

A PB would be overkill for a firewood tractor unless already had one laying around ready to put in.

check the carb adjustments if they are ok then look at the ignition plugs mag cap rotor possibly wires but doubtfull could also be out of time

I once bought a Late B that was told in the past it had a history of doing that and blowing out the valve cover gasket too. Nobody could figure it out. I bought it knowing it may have a problem, but it seemed to run good ? I got it home and was giving it the(once over)check up and when looking into # 1 spark plug hole to verify TDC I noticed that the cut outs in the piston top didn't match up to the hole. Someone had the piston rotated around upside down. So I pulled the crankcase cover off and rotated the piston/rods assy. around to the proper spot for the piston notches to align with the spark plug hole. I ended up selling the tractor and heard no more about it other then shortly after the head gasket was seeping. I checked the nuts were all loose so got by with a retorque.
So was the piston position the problem ? I don't know for sure, but they are designed to go in a certain way for a reason. Very easy to verify so it just might be worth a look at yours.
