b rod bearings

so i need alittle help. i have a 52 b and it was locked up so i pulled it apart and let it soak and got everyting ready to put back in. and we couldnt find any bearings that was in it. were not sure that it had bearings. i was told some have babbit rods??? the manual didnt specify.

and would a clutch bearing clank all the time?

My 49 B had babbitted rods. I don"t thick insert bearings happened till the model 50 came out. You can use the rods from a 50 in your B if needed. I did in both my 49 B"s.

About your clutch I can not help. Sorry

If there were a set of shims between the rod and cap, then you have babbited bearings. Hopefully you still have the shims, and hopefully they are still in order.

Unless the crank and bearings are gauled and/or otherwise in bad shape, you can probably reuse the existing rods and crank.

If things don"t look good, you can have the crank turned just enough to clean it up, and then have a place like Paul"s Rod and bearing pour new babbit material into your existing rods. They can match whatever you have the crank turned to.

Otherwise you can try to locate a set of insert bearings and rods from a 50 or a B that have had them put in.

My dad, had one of the first square axle B's ,it had a knock in the engine ,it had babbitt rods. Seems JD used them up from the earlier round axle models. The old retired jd mechanic who did an engine job on it bored it out and used bearings,the engine was rebuilt about 30 years ago,we never had any problems with it.
