HI Guy"s working on a 1946 B with a dist. It blowes air out the intake when trying to start it. I put in .045 over pistons, rings had a vale job done put it back toghter will not start. Checked the the slots for dist.drive were not flat front to back changed gov. gear so slot was flat still would not go could the crank gear and the cam gear be off.I did line up the timing marks.Could be 180* off. The flywheel will alone go on one way with the set screw in crank???????
HELP Thank You

If it's blowing air out the intake, the distributor isn't the problem.

Did you have the camshaft out of it?

Did you put the gear on backwards?

Take the valve cover off and turn the flywheel til the left valve moves on top dead center and see where your flywheel is to the mark on the side cover and then see where your slot is on the magneto. If they don't match it is off.

Yes the camshaft was out i did not take the gear of the shaft. the valves were adj to.020

Was working on tonight took off the Gov. housing looking at the cam gear it has two timing marks on it one on the insideof the gear and one on the outside of f the gear witch mark do you go by. I would the outside one to line up with the Gov. gear??????

Thank You
Rod

t boy 2
are you talking L.H cylinder on TDC on compperssion strok flywheel marks are lined up

Wounding what the two dot on the cam gear are for ordo you line up flywheel on the mark and put dist. slot flat the done ??????

Thank You Rod

This ain't rocket science so if you turn flywheel to left hand top dead center and that left valve starts to open the mark on the flywheel should be within an inch of the mark on the housing cover on the side. also the mag slot should be horizontal. If it is on compression and it fires its gonna do something.

t boy 2 is confused. To check valve timing, remove the valve cover and rotate the flywheel until the left hand exhaust valve starts to open. At this time the LHEO mark on the flywheel should be near the 3 o"clock mark on the transmission case. The LHEO mark is NOT the TDC mark.

I was confused as to what mark. Then went out and looked at it and truned flywheel till left hand exhaust valve opened and the mark LHEO.lined up then installed gov housing so mag slot was flat. Truned over to LH cylined to TDC. Looked at Mag slot is not flat is that right ?????

Thank's Rod

Rod,
You are making progress. It looks like your valve timing is ok. However, the governor slot should be horizontal at TDC. Let us know how you make out.

I don't believe you can take the cam out or put it (or the crank) back in if the gear is on.

I've heard at least 2 people that put the gear on backwards. In other words, they flipped it 180 degrees. If this happens, the marks will all line up, but none will be right. I forget which way the part number on the cam gear goes, I think towards the center of the crankcasae.

Ray,

I was able to pull the camshaft with the gear attached out of my "37 B, but not the "38 B. Go figure.

I may have confused you but I think something is out of line and until you find what it is it ain't gonna run so be patient. I got my share of 2 cyl. and they all are timed the same ways so don't get all rowled up at me if I say something wrong. It won't be the first time. My skin is tough by now.

HI Guy's worked on it today truned engine over till exhaust to open and trun flywheel to LHEVO then installed gov housing and had comperssion and no air out the intake. Installed dist but must be off one tooth dist is truned dowen the plug wires all most hit will have to trun back one. HAD IT RUNNING SOME tonight Need new battery Thank's tboy2and Tom43 very much not bad for my first 2 cyl i worked on

Thank you to all the GUY'S for all the help
