Broke the long spike on my bale spear. It is a Westendorf if that makes a difference. Where do you guys order your replacements?

There are several spear mount types, they are not all the same. You need to find out what style mount your Westendorf is.

The difference will be the socket taper and nut arrangement that holds the spear in the mount. Conus 2 is a common type for larger spears. Conus uses a nut that locks the spear in which has a taper to go on the socket side.

Some types have flat nuts with a flange and the taper is different.

The parts drawing of the spear kit on the Westendorf site looks like they might use a Conus 2 mount. Post a picture of the nut and mount end of the spear. Does the nut fit into a taper on that end of the mount socket? Have to do some digging, I think I have a sheet somewhere with some dimensions.

I have one for my John Deere 640 loader that has never been used, nor will it ever be by me at least. I don't know if it would work for you but I would never miss it if you came and stole it. I'd even show you where it is. (-:

Here is some dimension information for Conus and cross drilled sockets for Sparex. There are some "offshore" spears that use a similar tapered mount with flat nuts, that may or may not fit in Conus sockets.

You could call Westendorf, they are still in business.
Post a pic of what we are dealing with. There are several different styles and attachment methods.

I have bought a couple from a place called AGRI Supply when I made my own spear set up. Check the chart above to get the correct size.

My neighbor keeps two on hand ordered from Agri Supply. He needs them on hand as he breaks them often and can't wait when he's picking up bales. My thought is,,if your breaking them often you need to try a different supplier. I bought spear used and I have handled couple thousand bales and this is the first one I broke. The guy I bought it from said spike was original Westendorf. Which leads me to another question. What is typical number of bales handled before breaking?

I don't know that there is a typical number of bales handled that relates to when a spear will fail. That is dependent on several things bale weight, spear length and capacity rating, how much pounding the spear gets with a bale bouncing on it (rough ground travel) and spear quality. Lifting bales that are frozen down in the winter can put excessive strain on a spear. You can get spears with different weight ratings for a given mount size.

It would be interesting to see pictures and specs of what their spear is, if you can once you get it.

I have handled tens of thousands of bales and have never broken a spear. My neighbor regularly bends his cheapo tractor supply spears but I suppose that is to be expected.

I’ve never broken a spear.
I’ve seen several people either bend or break them by not paying attention and running them in the ground.
My main spear is an old school one that is about 2” dia and just sharpened on the end, can be tough to get all the way into a tight bale but they are strong. Mainly the ones I see broken and the slender ones that are tapered all the way back.

I must be lucky. I built a spear to handle large squares I was buying from a local auction using two tapered spears rated at 3,800 pounds. I found it also worked better than a single spear for round bales. This was several years ago and after misusing them to a level I should be ashamed of I have not broken a spear and my welds on the bracket have held which is surprising considering my welding skills.
