baler length

a friend and i are going to look at a NH 273 tomorrow his storage shed is 16ft deep he just wants to make sure he can get the baler out of the elements. my NH 275 with the chute extension off is about 15ish is the 273 about the same physical size whats the big diffrences between 273 and 275.
so far online it say my baler should be 240inches and the 273 about the same but that seems really long. also the seller wants 3000 for the NH 273 seems really high to me. whats your guys opinion?

Are you including the hitch in your measurement?

If you are the 273 will be at least 18 inches shorter, maybe 24 inches.

The 275 has the long hitch with the extra knuckles and a slip joint on the pto.

The 273 hitch is shorter with no slip joint or knuckles. Pto comes directly off the fly wheel and connects to the tractor. The chute on the 273 may be shorter as well.

I have a 273 and a 275 both have long tounge which have that extra Knuckle. they are pretty close in size. It just depends if you have a short tounge and to get more length just fold up the chute so 1 part covers the chamber.

Well, the price seems a bit high. For that price, better be in first class, almost new condition. Ask to see it bale a few, even if you have to take a few bales in, break them and hand feed them.

Many, many 273's had the long tongue and 3 joint PTO. Fact of the matter is, I doubt I've ever seen a 273 in these parts with a short tongue and 2 joint shaft.

I wouldn't buy a used baler unless it was demonstrated on hay as mentioned below, or
you are experienced with the model, and are an
experienced baler mechanic/operator.

Really

All the 273's around here had the short hitch. I thought it was standard on the 273. It must have been the way the local dealer ordered them in here.

Dad had a 275 with a long hitch two joint PTO and it was, along with the other 275's, the only ones with the long hitch in this area during that era.

Learned something today.

I even owned a 273/54A with a long tongue. I honestly can't recall seeing or working on a NH baler with a 3 digit model number and two joint PTO.

Just went to tractorhouse to look at balers.

About 1/3 to 1/4 of the 273's had the short hitch.

Just wanted to make sure I was thinking of the right model that had the short hitch and it wasn't the 269's or some other model.

There's a 273 sitting in a shed on one of the farms I work... and I'm 99% certain it's a short tounge, 2 joint shaft.
I would agree though that the vast majority were 3 joint...
The only caveat around here is that most people got their balers during the time of the 2 number series and those balers either did the job for the little guys or got the rest into round balers.... so there really aren't a lot of the 'newer' models around this area.

I think it will go in the 16' shed, mine is 24' & I still have alittle room to park something in front of the baler. 3k does sound on the higher end, better be in pretty nice shape.

does it have a kicker? that will add 3-4 feet. Long tongue? If it is 3 grand it better have a super sweep pickup and a bale kicker and the long tongue. I just sold mine for $2300, it was about 8 out of 10 condition wise. I replaced it with a 9 out of 10 model 326 that cost $4500, the 273 is not really any worse than anything else but it is simply limited by capacity.
