Baler Problems!!!

Hi!
Well you know how it goes with baler problems: night is coming on, dew point is close, you heard something on the radio about rain, and to top it all off you have a commitment tomorrow.
The baler is a NH 268, the problem we were having seemed to pop up suddenly. The twine on one side would get wrapped around the bill hook (if I've got the right name, the piece that grabs the string and twists), and when the bale got pushed out it would break the string. I tried adjusting the twine tension, thinking it wasn't tight enough. After I did that, the knots wouldn't hold on both sides. When I loosened it up, back to the same problem. Any ideas? Any "band-aid" solutions? Here's the rub. I won't be in the field as I have a commitment with a friend, so it would be my Mom, my Dad, and my brother working out there. None of us has yet grasped all of the names of the pieces yet so I'm embarrassed to ask, but could you also explain what that part is?

BTW the plate that puts pressure on the string as it comes out of the box would be twisted at an clockwise angle. Could this be part of the problemsymptom?

Not sure what you mean by wrapped around the bill hook, which is the correct term. If knot is just hanging on the hook the stripper arm needs adjusting to run closer to it and strip the knot from the hook. It is adjusted by bending it closer to the hook. The hook hasn't slipped out of the tension holder has it?

Ditto. Could also be that there is too much tension on the twine finger, and it doesn't want to release the knot no matter how close the stripper runs.
My guess is that it's either one or the other, and most likely the stripper...

First make sure there is equal tension on string coming out of twine boxes . It may not seem like much but is very important.There could be dirt or remanants of twine holting little plate off of twine letting it just fly through.

You may have found your own problem Dont now what you mean about plate clockwise but point is both strings need to have tension on swstring coming out of box . Just try to set same as one working as starter.

Also you may need to sharpen the knives. The need to be SHARP!!! If you can shave with them and not pull hear they are almost sharp enugh.

There is a roller on the end of the jaws on the bill hook that sometimes wears out and comes off which can cause the problem you describe. Solution is a new bill hook.

I would suggest that you get the manual on the baler as it has very good detailed info on what is wrong with the knotter and how to fix it. From there its just a long learning curve of trial an error until you get it right.

If the bill hook doesnt open wide to stretch the knot the stripper cant push the knot of the billhook.Older hooks had bronze rollers that wore flat spots and the hooks couldnt open wide.Later hooks used a seald ball bearing.Best way to work on this is to set the baler for a small bale and run the tie process by hand and watch it closly as it ties.Once the bale is a foot long shut off the pto.Trip the bale length arm by hand and turn the fly wheel by hand.Do this in the shade near the shop.Doing this out in the field in the hot sun with no tools is a waste of time.The knot stripper must run very close to the bill hook and travel the full length of the bill.This is one problem that a good baler mechanic could fix in a short time and the of cost his time would be the best money you will spend.Messing with a baler under power is dangerous.
