My 9n is arcing at connecting terminals after replacing gas tank?
All I did was disconnect battery 6v positive ground and when reconnecting all it does is arc weld ?
I have a cut out and regulator new that smoked the field wire in it?

Sounds like you might have pinched a wire somewhere in the tank replacement process.

And Welcome to the forums.

Can it be the starter solenoid stuck or burnt ?
How can I troubleshoot it not tractor guy retired disabled veteran rebuilding 1940 9N mostly all new parts.

You posted this happened after a tank replacement where you had only disconnected the positive ground. That to me indicates it was working properly before that and the problem developed with the tank replacement. If you have rewired it and had not had it operating before you installed the tank, Ray has the right idea, you need a wiring diagram and go back over the wiring you have done. What is the whole story here?

Before you begin troubleshooting, disconnect the ground cable from wherever it is screwed to the tractor, and attach both cable clips to the battery. We just had a topic on exploding batteries, and given your severe arcing problem, under the right circumstances the battery could go off in your face. Making and breaking the connection away from explosive materials will keep you from damaging the tractor or your body.

There should be a small 14 ga. wire on the solenoid, or starter switch, to charge the battery . Remove this and put the battery cable back on. Now touch the ground cable to the tractor. If still arcs, there is a dead short between the starter switch and the starter. If no arc , trace the 14ga. wire to see where it is grounded.

Tell your complete story. Did you buy and install a new harness from a vendor? If so, did it have a wiring diagram with it?

Or have you been building your own harness? If so, what drawing are you using?

You posted " JMOR HELP get it started". Does that mean you were using one of his drawings? If so post the drawing you were/are using.

Is the 1st photo that ends in 909 the condition of the tractor when you had the short? There is a yellow wire hanging down with a bare terminal. It could very well short to something. It may be disconnected only you know what is going on with it. Are the wires that go to the generator connected properly and secure with nothing touching the terminals?

JMOR helped me with new harness that had different color wires than mine and got it started. New carb, distributor points battery all put in had starter rebuilt too. I never connected hood back used small mower gas tank connected to carb to start it I'll look over wiring, now.
At this point it would be well to see a picture of the generator. Too little info on what has been done.
