Battery Cables

Another question that may be easier answered by the experts. On my 12v front mount, what guage battery cables are best and where is the best place to ground the negative cable.....to the side bolt that holds the battery tray on?

Also, how long should these cables be. My old ones where 15 inches (positive) and 20 inches (negative), measurements include the terminals.

All your help is appreciated.

From what i find in my catalog of Exactly Like Original parts.1939-1940 before ser.#12,500=Battery to starter cable was 6"long and cloth covered & Battery to ground was a flat braided cable 5 1/2" long
1940-1947 after ser.#12,499=Battery to starter switch cable was 21" long & cloth covered
Battery to ground cable also was braided 5 1/2"long
8N 48-52=Battery to starter relay cable was 10 1/2" long(No mention of covering)
8N 48-52=Battery to ground is 10" flat braided
No mention is made of the cable gauge, other than they are the same gauge as original.

Anvil:

Since you are not concerned with originality, the best solution for your 12V N is to use 1 Ga or larger cables. Ideally, you will connect the "ground" cable to one of the bolts that attaches the starter to the engine.

Since you have converted to 12V you can use cables smaller than 1 Ga but battery cables are kind of like money and HP: Some's good and more's better.
