Best small tractor for pulling

What's a good lightweight/smaller tractor for pulling? Deadweight / some transfer, antique, nothing heavily modified. I was kinda going between an Allis C, Farmall C, and an Oliver 66. It's mainly for a young kid/his mom to start on and have some fun. Ok, maybe me too. I'm sure this has been asked before but just looking for opinions. I know the Olivers are pretty good but can be tricky on the shifting and are a little bit bigger. I've never seen an Allis C pull, are they any good? Any other makes/models please suggest.

Thanks,

A Farmall C with Super C pistons and Super C head should have 27 hp. Also, a C-153 can be easily installed in a Farmall C. I don't much about the Allis C and the Oliver 66.

You mention light weight but you need to look into or be more specific of exactly what weight class you want. For example a lot of places will let you pull 2 classes sometimes 3. Its tuff to be competitive in two classes in purely stock classes because of the overlap and bigger tractor coming into play. Another example an allis chalmers C makes an excellant 2500 lb class puller but 3000 lb class brings in farmall C and maybe oliver 66's but their next weight class which is 3500 class allis wc/wd come in 3500 and are probably one of the best 3500 tractors out there (pure stock 201 cubes)

I would say for a young person an allis chalmers in 2500 class would be great, depending on rules, speed limit will actually help decide between allis chalmer c,ca or b, oh and by the way they are probably the cheapest of the tractors listed.

I would suggest installing wheelie bars and add some weight to the front as allis b/c usually need some weight upfront.

Most importnant Have Fun!

I started pulling on an A-C "C" and in fact still like to pull that tractor every once in a while. I have won many 2500 & 3000 class trophies on this one. My 11 year old son started pulling this year on an A-C "B" He won his very first pull earlier this Summer. In my oppinion the C has better gearing and more natural balance than the B, but they both work well. I'd also add Allis "CA" to your list of potential models. The slightly longer wheelbase plus higher allowable rpms of the CA are advantages. Good Luck! Kip

I like the Moline "R". It can pull in 3000# and up. The 206 engine bolts in and is stock appearing. It is capable of 55-60 horses without stroking. Parts and mods are cheap and plentiful. The tractor itself is different than your normal Allis B/C or Farmall BN/A/C.

I didn't know if you were seeking mega-horsepower or just normal speed limit pulling, but a Ferguson TE20 has an aluminum tranny housing, oil pan, front cover, and steering box. The engine is the same block as a triumph car. If British scares you, a TO20 with the Continental engine and 12.4X28 tires wins our 2500# class all year long pulling off its 3pt with nothing more than some M&W pistons. The TE or TO can beat 2500 easy.

One more option is the General, Avery, or Moline BF. These are very similar tractors. The Hercules engine was made from 113 to 141 cubes (IXA/IXB/IXLB engines). They are light. The MM one has a four speed tranny and 3-1/4" bore block. Older models are three speed and smaller bores.

Have fun. Lots of options. Just got a Case VAC myself. I'm unsure what to do with it.

a oliver 70 can be a mean sob i had one for many years won alot with it went form 3250 up to 5000# classes we got it up to 62 horse

Any of them. Seriously, it's a matter of brand preference. Pick the one you want and start tinkering.

JD B, AC C/WC/WD, Ollie 66/77, MM whatever, Farmall Super C/H.

If you're on a shoestring budget, go with the late model B (Creeper gear), doesn't go very fast and you won't run with the big HP ones all the time, but get lucky from time to time.

If you're going to build them, they all have potential.

A Ford 950 or 960 makes a pretty good light puller.

Stock 172 is 45hp, a 192 industrial is 62 hp, and it"s not hard or expensive to get almost 70hp from a stock stroke engine.

Pulls best between 3500 and 4500. Mine weighs 3205 without me on it and could be lightened some more.

i pull a Farmall "A" witha super A motor in her does pretty well in the 3000, might need a little more power for the heavier classes though

Not sure of your location but if you want to go the Super C route with the 153, I have one with a fresh c-153 ready to pull minus tires and paint. It would be a cheap tractor to play with and still be semi-competitive. Email for information.

my ollie 66 wieghs in @2660 w/o an operater...excelent on the stone boat...easy to hide hp"s...can be pricey to build though....been a real good piece....

Iv got a B allis chalmers with a d-15 series 2 engine ready to go for 3000 email is open if your intrested weights 2500 pounds.
