Big ol grinder.

Had my electrician friend look it over and start it up for the first time this afternoon.
It has a bunch of electric stuff that I only sorta understand that brakes it when you shut it off.
I wanted it all removed cause it's so bloody ugly but it all works so he talked me into keeping it all.
I do have a switch that I could mount above the motor and have him replace the ugly stop button tho. Last photo.
What says the forum about that - replace or no?
The mfrs tag and photos will tell more about it better than I can so I'll just bug out for now.
Every man needs a big ol grinder doesn't he?

I’m not a fan of the big ol stop button but I don’t like adding the little buttons on the top. If you could put those where the big one is I would say replace.

Looks like a dandy !

If I had an electrician friend, I'd ask him to put a 20 foot chord on the start button. That way I could stand outside the shop for that first run after putting on new wheels.

A wheel dresser for that thing must have a handle similar to a pitchfork ! Lol

We had a big one at work that had different grades of buffers instead of the grinding wheels. It did not have a shut off brake but I would have liked one. I’m exaggerating a little but it seemed like it took 10 minutes to wind down and stop. Loud and dangerous,

For my own use I'd mount a little toggle switch in or near the center base of the grinder (like a typical "little" grinder has) and trigger a contactor with it to switch the motor current. The contactor in the "brake box" should be able to be repurposed for the job.

(As it is the grinding wheel nuts must have to be snugged up "good" or the wheels would spin loose when the dynamic braking kicks in!)

We had an older bigun that size in the shop at the first mill I worked at. There wasn't any stalling it no matter how big the piece. A lot of heavy cast welding in those days and the little side grinders used for prep hadn't been invented yet. Later when they did come along the big boy was rarely used. The wheels were never dressed.

I would get rid of the ugly stop button.

You will wonder how you put up with a small grinder... Life is good.

I have one I bought at a sale 20 yrs ago. Still haven't used it. I have a small 6 inch. I do have a stone and use the wire wheel on occasion but the 4 1/2 is the go to tool and it's such a reflex I can sharpers drill bit in a minute.

Want one someday. The little table top 2 hp wanna bee's are a joke . Got one and it lays down and dies if you look at it.
Luck of the draw, I guess. I have a Cummins (the guys who sold tools town to town out of a semi-trailer) and it still works great. Must be 30 years old now.
