Black Walnuts

I have a bumper crop of black walnuts this year.
My side yard is about two acres. About 70 black walnut trees. Literally millions of nuts on the ground. Besides raking manually what implement is there to pick them up with? Lawn sweeper does not work.

Yep I use them also, unfortunately they tend to stash their collections under belt shields in air cleaners, exhaust pipes, etc.

I used my Jacobsen self propelled lawn sweeper, it has the rubber fingers on the reel to pickup twigs, leaves etc.
I didn't keep the area mowed this summer and it pick up a lot of trash, it knocks a lot of the hulls off, which is ok. I dumped the walnuts in a pile and I will sort them out of the trash.
I also have a bumper crop, just have two trees and the ground is completly covered and just as many still on the trees. someone said its a sign of a long winter.
I'm in Hairson county Indiana

Bumper crop indeed. I picked up 70 cu. ft. from just three trees. This thing is fantastic and works very well.
"Nut Wizard" is like a rolling sweeper for walnuts. Mine has a label that says call 888-321-9445 to order but I bet if you google it you can find it on line.

I'm going to set my deck down some and chop more of them up. Walnut shells blast the deck pretty clean.

In my area all the walnut growers use shakers to get them off the trees and nut sweepers to pick them up, the same equipment is used for almonds.

I wouldn't care to count how many walnut trees we have around the farm. They are blessed beautiful in high summer...big trees. I don't know what the squirrels do with them because I never see them once they are gone. They take every one of them by late November. We also have 10+ acres of hickory. Now those are tasty!

I've been looking for a source of shagbark nuts. Haven't had any for years. Swap them out for pecans in a pie receipe and people will fight over the next piece. If yours are sound and sweet let me know if we can arrange an exchange.

Good luck with that. I've had many, many folks say they want them. They NEVER show up. If you pick them up and bag them, folks might take them. Bunch of lazy folks now days.

Must be something with the year. I have noticed that most of the trees we have around have produced well this year too.

One tree in the yard though had a good crop last year but nothing this year.

One of those rotary brooms with the collection basket for a skid loader would work pretty good I would think. Maybe you can rent one?

Bumper crop in NY this year as well. One way is the "baganut" harvester. Haven't used one personally but know others that do. There's some Youtube videos of them in action as well and they come in various sizes.
baganut harvesters

I saw a lot of last year's crop as young seedlings poppin up in the lawn this summer. Must have forgot where they buried them.

I have a landscape rake for using with an ATV. one that has wheels and is adjustable. Made some sides for it. Just pull it till it's full and leaves the piles. Come back later with lawn cart and scoop them up using a silage fork

I was frankly more than a little surprised when I ate my first hickory nut this year. Some are shagbark and some are different but they are all good sweet nuts. We are picking up a mess for Christmas cookies this year. If you are anywhere close you are welcome to stop by and gather what you need. There are 10 acres of hickory woods...even with the help of my furry fiends I cannot eat them all.

The Amish buy them here in west central Indiana, they have a hauler and weigh them after hauling, have a friend thats sold 2000 pounds so far, has grandsons to help pick them up.

I'm in Idaho. I haven't had any shagbark nuts since I moved here 27 years ago. I will gladly pay you what it's worth for you to box some up and send them.

I use a garden weasel nut gatherer. It has a handle with a wire spool on the end that you roll on the ground and the walnuts pop right in. It works pretty good.
