Bleeding diesel issues

Hi All, I am hoping someone might be able to help me. I live in Australia and have a Miniloader with a Yanmar Diesel motor in it (3TNE74). It recently had a large amount of white smoke coming from it after a days work. No overheating or anything like that - just started to happen. The week before I had done a service including changing the fuel filter. So I suspect there are two issues. Either the on of the injectors his not spraying properly or something more serious (ie rings, head gasket etc)

I did some debugging and "cracked" each of the injector leads one at a time. Cylinder one, stalled the engine, cylinder two, stalled the engine, Cylinder three the engine kept running and the white smoke stopped.. Hmmmm

Not really sure what to think, but i made a judgement that maybe in changing the fuel filter, there was some crap what made it way to the injector and caused an issue. So I took all the injectors out and went through the procedure to ensure they were clean and tidy (stripping them down). Replaced the glow plugs and put it back together.

So I am now trying to test my first "fix" but I cannot get diesel to the injector. I have opened the inlet of the fuel pump and can pump fuel through there until there is no bubbles. no problems there.. but tighten everything up and crack the fuel inlet to the first injector and I just cant get fuel to the injector..

I am stuck, can anyone please help me??

Thanks heaps for your advice Aaron - I will give that a try.. It's it reasonable to expect that with the fuel lines all disconnected the pump should squirt or do I need to remove them one at a time?

Hello, i tried the hammer technique today with no success <E</E> I was unsure how hard to tap but I gave it a reasonable whack. I hate to ask, but how hard is it to service the fuel pump? I have the service manual but it looks beyond me.. is there anything else I can try?

I'm not aware of any routine servicing procedure for the pump. If you mean repairing, I guess anything can be fixed, but as far as I know it's considered a replacement item.

Thanks for your comment - I did see in my workshop manual you can pull it apart and service it.. Do you know where you can get a new one from?

The service manual does have a couple pages dedicated to taking the pump apart and putting it back together. Then, towards the back of the book it has about a dozen pages on how to re-calibrate it for volume, pressures, and timing using all sorts of specialty tools 'if the barrel or barrel stopper are removed'. My experience is that you can take them apart &amp; reassemble them but they will never be right again unless you take them to a diesel injection shop to get setup. It <B><s></s><U><s></s>might <e></e></U><e></e></B>run but will never be right.

Any injector pump repair shops around you. The price of a new pump is going to be lots of $$.

OK - thanks for all your replies.. I have had success (sort of) I was about to remove the pump and take it to get tested. When I opened up the side door to detach the Governer linkage and I thought I would slide the fuel slider thing across.. Hmm so I thought well lets see that happens if I hold it open and turn the engine over.. presto - the pump starts pumping. OK so I connect it all up again and again, presto, I have diesel to the injectors and a little tighten and I have ignition.. Having said that, I am needing to hold the fuel delivery rail open the whole time.. So I am off to search now on what activates the solenoid open opening fuel delivery..

On the downside, when it did fire up, I still have lots of white smoke do I am now assuming my original problem is no longer fuel delivery and something more sinister.. <E</E> Maybe rings? I need to start searching on that now..
