Bleeding Injector Pump 175

Tractor died on me while it was running. It still turns over fine, will run for a second or two with a bump of ether so I am fairly certain it is a fuel issue. It just slowly idled down and cut off. I tried bleeding the the fuel lines, and it all goes per usual, until I get to the top bleed screw on the pump. The bottom bleeder shoots out diesel very well. When I close that one up and open the top, I get hardly a dribble.

I am assuming the top bleeder on the injection pump should have a good amount of diesel coming out when turning the engine over- right? I am thinking internals in the injector are the issue- I am not sure how exactly the fuel gets to the top of the pump- is that the plunger system with the small cylindrical filter screen on the back of the pump?

I rebuilt the pump myself a couple years ago, and had no issues for a few hundred hours of running, until now. I used a rebuild kit from yesterdaystractors site. Could this be the result of poor quality parts? Is there a better place to get them?

Make sure the CONSTANT BLEED ORIFICE on top of the filter base is NOT PLUGGED. It can be a banjo bolt OR a straight fitting with a small return line on top. When it plugs it can't let any TRAPPED air out of the filter base as it should, and the air WILL go to the injection pump and cause immediate shut down. The top cover bleed screw DOES NOT need to have fuel for pump to work, and can be bled later after engine is running. the LOWER bleed screw MUST BE AIR FREE OR PUMP WILL NEVER WORK. I've seen this happen several times as an OLD MF mechanic, and Diesel injection repair in my past fifty years and counting. Also make sure the SUPPLY pump is working right to, or injection pump can't work right. SOME diesels will work without that feed pump, BUT NOT Perkins/MF models.

Yep, that sure was it. Took that bolt off and blew it out, runs just fine now. I did a lot of tillage this past fall in a very dusty part of the county, that must have been what caused it.

Thank you Dieseltech, you are the man
