Renee and I spent 3 hours in the shop today, the BN we bought Saturday is alive and well. We have a fairly long checklist we complete before we ever try to start one. But once we try ,we know it's gonna run! It's a smooth runner! Radiator leaks everywhere 😔,but we have a decent spare. Bore scope picture of the piston, definitely ain't original flat top pistons ....but they don't look exactly the same as the Fire Crater pistons in my A and B. Anyone recognize them?

What does the n. stand for,? Trying to learn. Thanks GG Wes

My Grandad's Farmall B had pistons like these minus the arrow. 3.125's. They are cast not aluminum. They were put in at least 50-55 years ago. I can't find a pix of them right now.

What the heck, how else would on know what side of the piston was supposed to face rearward?
Ya ok, so I will add to my post. The arrow is usually stamped in. Didn’t think I need to give every-little detail which you should know, I’m sure.

The N stands for Narrow. The rear track of a BN is 8 inches narrower than that of a B. It is accomplished by making the differential shafts on both sides 4 inches shorter than a B. They are 22 inches each side on a B and 18 inches on an A. The B and BN are identical except for the rear track width. All parts except the differential shafts, differential shaft housings, the foot pan, the pedal guard and the seat mounting are interchangeable between a B and BN.

The B came out in 1939, the BN variant came out in 1941because some farmers didn't like the rear wheel spacings available on the B.

Those pistons look like they are similar to the pistons that were available for H's from Tractor Supply Company in the 1950's. Thats when TSC was really a "Tractor Supply Company". My dad used to be able to buy an engine "overhaul kit" for an H for less than $75.00 from the TSC store in Sioux Falls, SD. Its contents included sleeves & step-head pistons that worked in both H's & super H's. It included all gaskets with standard rod bearings. Instructions said to wrap sleeves in newspaper, put them in a deep freeze for 24-36 hours before installing them. The instructions also told the buyer to have the head worked over by a competent machinist. We farmed 400(+/-) acres of small grain and row crops with 4 H Farmall's. We usually rebuilt one of them every other winter from the time i was about 10 until I went to college in the fall of 1961. TSC had similar kits for JD & AC tractors & I'll bet they had kits for A's & B's too.
