Bobcat 722 Repower

Has anybody ever repowered a 722 with another engine? Mine is getting very tired and refuses to start without a good sniff of ether, and this is with its original Ford 1600 gas engine. I"d like a small diesel to replace the tired gas pot, but at this point I"m just looking for any small 4 cylinder engine with at least 40 horsepower that would fit without having to move the radiator. We were thinking about a Honda 1.6L from like a 91? Civic, I"m looking for any other suggestions.

You need to know the RPM the engine turns. A diesel might be easier to adapt than a gas engine because you won't need to add a governor. A gas engine shouldn't need ether to get going. It might be easier and cheaper to fix the existing engine. I've heard it's basically an industrial version of a Pinto engine.

High Idle is about 2200. Its nothing special. I know it shouldn't need ether to start, but it does because compression is so low. There is so much blow by, we rigged up a peanut butter jar to the breather to catch the oil coming out with the blow by. We've tried getting parts for the engine, but its getting old enough that parts are getting harder to find and are getting expensive. I'm on a budget is why I'm trying to repower rather than rebuild whats there.

Hello Sam,

I can supply you with a complete out of frame engine kit for your Bobcat for less then $400.00.
You will have to bore the block, I am sure you could rebuild the engine cheaper then trying to repower it.
Thanks Ed
