Bobwhite Quail

I was thinking about getting a few Quail. I enjoy hearing the (bob-bob whiite) call that they make. Do other quail make the same sound?
Any info is apreciated. TIA
P.S. We used to have them wild,here in south eastern Pa. I believe we were on the northern fringe of their range. But have not seen/heard them for years.

You can't keep quail without a permit. It should be easy to get but don't get caught raising them without one.

Untill you get rid of the foxes and other
preditors you won't have quail or pheasants.
I'm on the pa line in harford co md and it
has been quite a few years since I have seen
either quail or pheasants .

Back in the early seventies my father raised 250 bobwhite quail. He let everyone go. By 2nd year couldn't find ANY.

This year while harvesting corn in central ohio I saw several quail, no coveys but atleast there's a few here! Blue quail doesn't make the same sound as Bobwhites!

Around here any bird or loose animal is quickly killed by some idiot with a pellet gun. Seems the culture in Hawaii is, "If it moves, kill it immediately and feel like a man."

It is not the predators that are the problem(the good Lord put them all here to start with)it is the habitat is gone, all of the 200ac farms we used to have had fence rows now we have 1500ac farms and not a fence on the place. CPR ground was seeded to fescue and qual need more cover and bare ground to feed.

Here in northeast Texas, they used to be plentiful, but fire ants seem to be the reason for their disappearance.

I'm with you Rocky, it's not hunters or predators that wipe out everything that moves, it's IDIOTS. Here in Wi. this past winter we had some MEN (???) with snowmobiles running down deer and killing them just for fun, when a deer would go down or they would knock it down, they would drive on top of it and tear it up with the snowmobile tracks. Imagine the fun these guys can have with our wild turkey population, turkeys being dumb and 4 wheelers being "wicked fast" should make for a good GAME for our lame brained friends.

Did you here about the DNR busting them kids in the last few days for shinning and killing critters at night? If they do that to animals what will they do to someone"s kid some day.
Back to the quail. Yes the fence rows being gone hurts them. But, I have not seen one person put a finger on one of teh biggest predators of these little ones and all other small birds. Feral cats. I am very fortunate to live next to a lady vet. Well seeing she lives in the coutnry she brought home all the unwanted cats from town. Well there went the neighborhood. In one summer from seeing the 3 coveys on teh farm down too maybe a handfull left. The 22 was a main piece of equipment when traveling to teh feild each day. I knwo this is a hard thign to do but it needed done.

We have/had a cat lady also, she lives in town and has some land near me. she finally got too old to come out every day to care for her cats, I wouldn't doubt if she had a 100 of em. Nothing there now but a bunch of very bad shacks and cages, don't know exactly what happened to her cats but just about all the strays in the area seem to have disapeared some how.

We used to have plenty of them. Loss of habitat, over hunting, coyotes and cats, people catching baby chicks and trying to raise themselves, and fire ants are the worst, they attack chicks as they are hatching.
