Boiling a John Deere B block

I would like to boil the block from the 1942 John Deere B to get all the oil cleaned off and also clean the inside of the block from all that coolent build-up. What solutions do you use and is this something that I can do or should I find a shop that will do it for me. What is a good price to pay for this service??? Thanks Andrew

I sandblast all my J.D. blocks.Inside and out, then you can see what you have.I try to avoid applying any heat, until theres fire in the cylinders.

The "boiling" solution used to be plain old Lye or Sodium Hydroxide so strongly mixed that a drop of it could be felt "working" on your skin.

EPA has outlawed the practice using Lye.

No, you are not allowed to do this yourself unless you want charges brought against you. Best to hand the job off to a regulated machine shop and let them use something less toxic but almost as effective (big secret).

If you get quoted more than $50 for a boil out even on something as big as this, keep asking. A high volume shop should be very happy and pleased to do it for you for $25.

Coolant doesn't build up, so this won't be a fix for that.
