Brake drum screws

Is there an easy way to remove the 4 brake drum screws on a 1949 8N? It would be great if there was a very big right angled screw driver similar to those used in electronics..is there such a thing? I can't see any way to this without having 3 arms & hands.

Cheers!

Smoke wrench, the only easy way, if they are really stuck.

They are not necessary anyways.

Put there to hold the drum on on the assembly line.

Dunk,if an 8n drum lands on your foot when you take the wheel off you will know what the screws are for.Bad info, you may get the Dufus award this post.

I couldn`t get mine out either, but thanks to a tip from a poster a while back, they came right out when I tapped on the ends of the slots with a chisel and a 3 lb hammer. Unscrewed slicker `n anything and didn`t damage the slots

Dan, The question wasn't about best practices, it was about an EASY way.

I can usually get them out, but it ain't always EASY.

I have never been able to stand between an 8N tractor and the wheel while removing the wheel, and have yet to see a wheel with a hole rusted thru it big enough for a brake drum to fall thru, and onto my foot.

I have worked on many vehicles of many different sizes over the years, and an 8N tractor is the only one I can remember that had screws holding the brake drums on.

Do you run them without brake shoes or something?

I guess all of these folks are Dufases too?

You need a cold chisel that will fit the slot or one just a tad bigger. Install the chisel in the slot or bang it in. Put a pair of vice grips on the chisel shank and then start hitting the end of the chisel with BFH, Keep a little pressure to the left on the vice grips. They will come loose and you can reuse the screws. A help'n hand comes in handy here. What you have is a unbreakable hand impact or use a hand impact but expect to break the bits.

Dukester:

Nine times out of ten you can remove these screws with an impact driver.

For those rare times when you cannot, take the largest flat screwdriver bit that came with the impact driver and insert it into a properly sized impact socket on your impact wrench. I have never seen this method fail.

Verrrry Interrresting! I'm not a mechanic, but if the drum were held only by lug nuts and you were on one side and your helper on the other (understand a rear wheel is very heavy), couldn't the drum possibly come off together with the wheel and maybe fall on the floor or on one or the other's foot? Just curious. Thanks. Angelo

Dunk, be afraid, BE VERY AFRAID... there is no authority like the DAN HILL AUTHORITY... he might call you a name!

Stranger things have happened, Angelo!!

Folks have had to pick themselves up off the ground, behind the tractor, from removing the steering wheel, after completely removing the acorn nut in the attempt.

Since we-ins are ifn'...

Ifn' the brakes worked, and the parking brake was applied, prior to removing said wheel from tractor, it would be virtually impossible for said brake drum to fall off with removal of said wheel.

The drum wont fall off until you roll the wheel aside.Any real mechanics on here ever have a rear drum fall off a car while changing a tire or adusting the brakes. This happens when Dufus throws out the tinnerman nuts that should be on rear drums. One fellow had a brake drum fall off while changing a tire,it rolled down a bank and into a brook.

Dunk...I started laughing uncontrollably after reading this....don"t know why I found it so funny...I guess you finally have the one-up on the other dude and cat"s got his tongue!

On second thought I would like to apologize to you both, as I know I am the real IDIOT here, and have just proved it with these posts.

Please forgive me...

I guess sometimes folks that yell Dufus, end up finding out who the Dufus really was.

Wonders, and the Internet never seem to cease to amaze me anymore...
