Brass Tags

HEY FELLAS,CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHAT THE BRASS TAG MEANS ON TRACTOR.have a friend who recently purchased a 730 WITH A BRASS TAG. THANKS FOR ANY RESPONSE.

Can't say for sure on the 730 but on the B it means the first year they where made and if that holds true on the 730 it means that 730 is one of the first year tractors

If a Deere tractor has a brass tag, it simply means that tractor was made during a period of time Deere was making their tags out of brass.

Deere used steel, aluminum, or brass for tags, depending upon which was most readily available (cheap?) at the particular time the tractor was produced.

That's the simple, straight truth, don't read anything more special into a BRASS TAG than that!

What does it look like how big is it. If about 3 by 4 in. and has lots of info it could be a military or government tag.

You are missing the point.

As I posted before, the actual DEERE serial # tag could be steel, aluminum, or brass.

The rumour persists that having a BRASS "tag" majes a tractor "special".

What can POTENTIALLY make a tractor special is it's serial number, stamped on WHATEVER tag material DEERE was using at that particular point in time.

It just means the green guys will pay even more for an already overpriced tractor so they can brag about it.

Bob are you 100% sure on that. I know from what I have been told the only year a B will have a brass tag is if its a 1935 which was the first year the B was made. From then on it will be some other type of tag other then brass

If what you are saying about your B is true, that would make 1935 one of the years brass tags were used. ALL the tractor models, during that time period, would have had the brass tags.

A have a 1954 "70" with a brass tag. Would you say that makes it any more or less "special" than a 1935 "B" with a brass tag?

Could be then that the first year the B was made and the fact it has a brass tag means that year they only used the brass tags and then for some reason switch to some other type. I know I have never seen a B in any other year with a brass tag but I haven't seen B from all the years they where made so who knows

It means absolutely nothing in terms of added value. I have owned 6 730's ranging from 1958 to 1960 models and they all had brass SN tags. John Deere used a metal for SN tags what ever they could purchase. The mythe of brass tag tractors being special is simply false. If it were true we would all have special tractors.

The simple fact is, your tractor IS special (first year, 1935) because of it's low serial number, NOT because of the brass tag. It just happened to be built during one of the periods DEERE was using brass tags, on the "B", and OTHER machines, as well. I even have a DEERE 110 LGT from the 60's, as well as some a couple of bale throwers from the same era, with brass tags as well. Special? NOT at all.

My 1956 60 has a brass tag. Nothing rare or special about it. Dad's 1960 730 gas had a brass tag. Only thing special about it was the 3rd - 5th transmission option.
