Briggs model 14

I picked up a David Bradley yesterday that has a Briggs and Stratton on it. Best I can tell it is a Model 14. I sanded the points but am not getting fire. Can you test the coil? Other than the finger test? Does anybody know of a good place to find parts for such a beast? I was told the engine was original and the tractor is a 1956 year model. Thanks

Check your magnets on the flywheel to make sure they have good magnetism. Use a flatblade screwdriver to touch the magnets. If there's weak magnetism that's probably causing no fire to your plug. You could also install a new condenser to rule it out. If you have good magnetism on your magnets and a new condenser and still no fire your armature/coil probably needs replacing. Any lawn mower shop can probably a new armature. You need all the numbers off the fan shroud so they order the correct armature. Hal

I have a B&S model 19D that has weak flywheel magnetism. Can it be recharged? I have replaced everything else concerning the magneto.

You can check your coil with an ohm meter. Go with the black lead on your ohm meter to the wire with the brass end on it to the wire going to the points with the red lead and you chould get 0 ohms. Now go to the same wire with the brass end on it to the wire going to the sparkplug and if it is good you should read at least 3 1/2 to 5 ohms. It works for me. Good luck. If your engine has been sitting long you may need to get the rust off the coil face.

Hi is this a cast iron or alum model 14? If its a cast iron one with the points mounted external its real simple to convert it to battery ignition.

Check with your garden tractor repair shop to see if they can recharge your magnets. You may be able to buy another flywheel with strong magnets if they can't recharge your magnets.

You also can use an auto type coil and bypass the magnets. You disconnect the armature wire at the points. Use a small 6 volt battery for power and run a wire from the coil to the points. Run the battery voltage to a switch and to the coil. Then ground your battery. You can recharge the battery when it gets low with your battery charger. Hal
PS: If you have battery start you can use that battery.

It is the cast iron model with the exposed points. I am going to try a new condenser and go from there. Thanks

Hi if the mag coil is bad or the magnets then as Hal posted it is very easy to convert that engine to battery ignition using an automotive coil and you will always have good spark provided the points and condenser are good. Is the DB a 2 wheel or 4 wheel tractor like the Sears Suburban 725?

It is the two wheel model. No good place to put a battery. But if that is what I have to do to be able to play with it I will.
