Broken Bolts

Broke off 2 out of 4 3/4-10 bolts that hold on the hitch when trying to take the hitch off. Friend said a person can burn em out with a cutting torch because the steel with melt before the cast iron. Has any one tried this method of burning broken bolts out? Gravity is at least on my side.

had to do that on a 730, burned all 4 fender bolts and a bunch of the studs for the implement attatchment points. be very careful, youll see threads as the bolt melts then run a tap throught the holes to clean up the threads.

I would like some information on just how you do this. One of the implement attachment bolt holes on the front of the rear axle on my 630 has a tap broken off about one-third the way into the hole. For the life of me, I can't get it hot enough with my torch to "puddle" before applying the cut lever. It appears that the heat is deflected back out the hole rather than heating the broken tap.

I'd try welding nuts on the broken bolts. MIG welder works best. Let it cool down before you try to turn it out. This even works well if the bolt is broke down in the hole. You can also weld a washer on the broken bolt then weld the nut to the washer.

I always use the method S.C. suggested. I used to try to burn the bolts out but torch heat and cast iron can cause trouble. Heating cast with a torch causes the cast to get very hard and very brittle.

Yes, and even if the bolt is broken so it is recessed down into the hole, you can choose a nut that will fit into the hole, and then weld down through the hole in the nut to the broken bolt, and then weld another nut to the top of the first one to get it all up to a height where you can get a wrench on it.
