Broken Generator Stud

First off hello to all and hope the winter is treating people well. Don't post often but I do read on here quite a bit. Now to the problem..... 1948 6 volt positive ground front mount mutt of an N; I noticed that my tractor was no longer showing a charge when running, I know the ammeter works because it will dip when cranking and show a discharge when key on and tractor not running. I polerized with no avail, but I noticed the ground stud on the generator was loose so I went to tighten it and had a baby duey moment and it snapped off. So the top part of the stud and nut came off and the bottom part dropped into the generator casing. I suppose I will be having to take it apart and find said stud and put in a new one. I am mechanically saavy just wanted some tips or stuff to look for in this. Sorry for the lengthy post but any help is appriciated. :?

Clelle......you have just flunked shadetree mechanic 101 (grin) In order to be reinstated you must find the missing stud.

You write......"I suppose I will be having to take it apart and find said stud and put in a new one"......sounds like a plan to me. Hardest part about enny electrical motor disasembly is puttin' the brushed back in their holders.

It should be intuitively obvious, clean and degrease and then re-oil bearing and bushes. (NOT BRUSHES) POLISH yer burned copper armature bars with sandpaper, don't worry about heavy wear grooves. ......Dell

Really cant help ya, but if it makes you feel better I done the same thing about 15 min. ago. Took it to an auto electric shop. Hope your day is a little brighter now:/

So is there a parts kits tht I can get with the studs and replaceable small parts if need be, or can I just put another stud/bolt with small head in there?

The ground screw can be bought in a hardware store,Take the broken screw with you and match it.There are many shops ready to take advantage of you.25 bucks is the going rate in Rhode Island as reported by a poster on here.Early generators didnt have a ground screw.

I suppose if all I need to do is match it up I will take a trip to my dad"s house. He has never thrown a bolt out from anything, coffee cans upon coffee can full of nuts and bolts. Thanks for the replys gentlemen, I will give her a go this weekend.
