Broken PTO shaft

I was mowing with a bush hog attached to my 9N when the PTO splined shaft broke. I think what happened is that the lift raised a little, putting shear pressure on the shaft. I didn't actually touch the lift lever. Can this lever creep up like that?

There seems to be no damage except the broken shaft, some mangles tabilisers and a rather scared operator. The shaft broke just where it emerges from the rear of the tractor. The stub still rotates without any interior weird noises. The slip clutch connection was undamaged.

It seems that what I need to do is to replace the PTO shaft. Is this as straightforward as it looks - undo four bolts - slide out old unit - slide in new one? Or are there some hidden snags in this?

A new assembly seems to cost about $120. I see some salvage aprts going for much less. Is this false economy?

John:

Replacing the PTO in your 9N is a 30-45 minute job so long as the splines are not twisted inside of the tractor so that the shaft comes out easily. You do not even need to drain the oil if you park the tractor on a steep downhill incline.

If the shaft will not come out easily, you have a much bigger job. Post back for more advice if yout shaft does not pull out readily.

I should also have advised you to verify that the PTO shaft does not bottom as it telescopes when you lift the mower. This can damage the shaft and/or bearing.

Unfortuntaely, you will not know if the splines are twisted until you try to remove the shaft.

John,
If it doesn't come out easily, look a few posts down. Got a lot of good counsel under one titled "Hyd fails to lift and Twisted PTO Shaft" (or something close). Good Luck!
Dave.

John,
I have several 'spares' that I got from a farmer/friend that pulls them out to use his fleet of 'N's for pulling trailers only.
40 bucks plus UPS from 93706.

Thanks,

jim

These are complete assemblies. Seal/housing, bearing, and shaft. I haven't a clue as to their mfgr/origin. They are 1 1/8".

Jim,
One of those is exactly what I need. I'd like to buy one. How do I get a check out to you? Can you estimate shipping costs?
