Brush Hog Height adjustment

Hi all, I have searched and read a bunch of posts on here, but cant quite answer my question. I have a ferguson T0-30 with a 5 ft bush hog mounted to it. My issue is that the front skids drag more than they dont, and I am getting a lot of scalping goin on. How should I go about adjusting this? I am a little confused because there is an adjustable top link, but then a chain between the top link and the deck. The mower is tilted towards the front also. If I lift the arms to get the skids off the ground, then the tailwheel also comes up. Is there a way that I can set it up so that at the max down draft position the mower will be at the correct height? Sorry if this is confusing, but I am just getting into all this.. thanks.

Mike If you ahve it in draft control that is your problem. A to-30 has position control doesn't it? If so position control is what you need. If not, then rig yourself up some limiting chains that the mower can hang on at the highth you want the grass cut at with the hydraulic control fully in the "down" position. With this set up you can still lift the mower over objects, and the put it right back down on your chains to hold the cutting highth. Good luck and be safe!

Yes, I do have it in draft control, I dont think I have position control, it is a 1951, if I did have position control where would it be? thanks

There may be several ways to adjust the front height of your mower depending on your three point hitch and mower tail wheel.

You can adjust the top link by screwing it out to make it longer. This pushes the top of the mower back away from the tractor. This raises the front of your mower.

You can adjust your 3 point arms by screwing them in to make them shorter. This raises the front of your mower.

You can use a "rooster comb" top link that has notches and put the chain in the first notch. I have a "rooster comb" on my Corsicana rotary cutter and put the chain on the notch closest to the tractor. This raises the front of the mower.

You can set your mower tail wheel in a lower hole to lower the rear of the mower.

Any or all of the above have worked for me over the last 40+ years.

If I extend the top link the chain between the deck and top link will just become more slack wont it? I am interested in these limiting chains, where would I hook them up on the tractor though? They would go from the lift arms to where? Thanks again...

my woods mower has the limiting chains on it. they run from the lower lift pins on the mower to the top link on the tractor. it has 2 3/16 inch steel plates that slip in on either side of the top link. the chains hook to these brackets. you adjust the length of the chains to limit the drop of the front of the mower. i set it up on level ground so the front of the mower is just off the ground. then set your tailwheel so the mower is level. be sure the chains cannot get caught on the pto shaft when the mower is raised. a couple bungee straps work good to pull the chains to the sides when the mower is up.

the bush hog you have will not work on a to-30 the why it is with the chain at the top the top has to be solid and it can't move call me for help 920-446-3296

Keep asking your question and someone better with a computer than me will print you a picture of how to chain up your hog. They did for me last year and it worked great. Maybe the Ford board.

you don't need any chains on your hog to make it work just call me . i have 5 to-20 same as a 30 and cut road sides and you don't need or want chains

i'm either lost or somebody else is. the chains shown in the picture are used for sway control of the bush hog. they shouldn't be used for lifting of the bush hog at all. use a solid third arm and adjust it as prevuoulsy stated to get the height of cut you want. adjust the tail wheel to make the front til down just ever so slightly. use chains running from some solid point on the tractor to the lower 3 point hitch arms to keep the bush hog from swining wildly about. they need a little play in them, but not much.

Not exactly, the chain he is talking about goes from the top of the 3PH to the rear of the mower. Many, many mowers use the same construction. It is a good system that allows for more movement of the mower deck to prevent binding and scalping.

John, those chains do nothing to prevent sway (physics would prevent them from doing so anyway, installed in that fashion). If you look to the side of the lower 3 point arms, you will clearly see that stabilizer bars are installed. These chains LIMIT the downward movement of the mower.

I set brush hog about 4" to 5" off the ground front to back level . if brush hogging pasture raise to 6"to 8 " to cut weeds & leave grass . I don't use to cut brush just grass & weeds .

The picture below no dought works, but the system I refered to has Logging chain hooks on top and its easy to adjust.

Maybe ask your question on the Massey board.

If the front is digging in the ground raise the three point hitch up some. The top link isn't going to have anything to do with the front of the mower. The top link controls how much the back is allowed to pivot & holds the back up when raised.
