Thanks--the weather should warm up and the snow!! will be gone by the w/e so my first thing is to pull off the VR and check it out inside. I remember the first time I started the '50A up last Friday, the generator and VR were abnormally warm and I thought-hoped that the mild amount of smoke was from oil somewhere it shouldn't be.

I did polarize it and the VR "was" new and I do have it Positive ground. I'm sure I'll be back for more help.

Is this a 3 wire or 4 prong VR? There are two terminals on the genny - F AND A. These wires must go in their proportionate spot on the 3 or 4 prong, whichever you have.

i'm guessing the contacts stuck together. kinda odd for a new VR.

NJ, Those warm n smoke words you used could spell troubleeeeeeeee. Sometimes protective film or coatings may get warm n act up a while till things settle in but that "warm" I still dont like. Of course, if you shut a tractor down and the VR's internal cutout relay portion stays closed (its supposed to open rememebr) that causes a high current draw out of the battery to the Gennys ARM post and cuz the belt has it stuck from free to spin she heats up plus high internal VR current may cause heat n smoke?? If the belt were removed so the genny is free to turn (as it will since its also a DC motor) things wouldnt get so hot but thats still indicative of a stuck closed Cutout Relay. If the cover is off and the cutout relay is closed (should be normally open until genny is producing higher then battery voltage) you might open it then clean/buff/polish the contacts n try her again...... If they got welded shut for some reason once you file off that shiny protective contact coating they can stick again. I trust you Polarized the Genny BEFORE you started the tractor the first time???

I trust the VR is wired correct?? Theres not any seperate hidden underneath or off on one side all by itslef or unlabeled 4th terminal is there?? If so thats usually the ARM/GEN terminal in which the other three together side by side are BAT FLD LOAD. If it just has the 3 terminal VR they would be labled BAT ARM FLD.
