building a 880 diesel

More rpm, better breathing, more fuel or a bigger displacement. About covers everything if turbos and superchargers are include in 'breathing'. Oh, and the higher compression/combustion temperatures will improve the thermodynamics but may have associated problems to contend with.

Roosa Master pump (unless it already has one)1650 cupped pistons and a direct inject head from a 283 or 310 Waukesha if the rules allow, or just bolt in a 1800 early 1750 engine if you want to keep the power cell injectors or a direct injected 310 if it doesn't matter

Hey Doug do new holes need to be drilled and tapped in the 190 block and/or direct inj head to get them to fit? I"m looking forward to the Oliver show and the tractor pull at Prairie Village in August.

A direct injection head will not bolt on without quite a bit of drilling and tapping. Pistons would need to be shortened. About .030 on 310 pistons and about .220 on 283 pistons, valve reliefs would need to be recut.

I"ve done a few 88/880"s with 3 7/8 bore flattop pistons, a 283/310 crossfire cam, a 1600 head, and a roosamaster.

A 310 crossfire or direct would be good if it"s a option.

Brad is there an advantage going with a 1600 diesel head vs and 880 diesel head? Would the 1600 head require some holes to be plugged on the back of the head? Does the crossfire 283/310 cam and tappets fit right into a 190 crankcase?

maybe others know more about this but I set a 310 head on an 88 block and there was only 1 head bolt that was 1/2 hole off so I don't quite understand the drilling and tapping thing, the 310 does not use as many head bolts as an 88, I do have one or two 310 heads around here

so they direct injected the 1750 a few years before the 1650? I thought the first 1750's were idi since they were basically carryover 1800's, I guess I learned something new.

as for the Madison the antique pull will be on Thurs. this year , great plains pullers will be Fri., Outlaw pull Sat. and the exhibitor pull (no suicase weights, stock drawbar)is Sun. at 10am

I have a book that also will say that. They introduced the 1750 to the dealers early in the fall of 1966. The 1650 direct injection engines were in productio early in the spring of 1967

I didn't think the 1650 got di until 68. The 283 sure is a snappy, nice running engine. I had a 68 1650, needed an oh so I sold it to Obrien Co. Imp., wished I had kept it and redid the engine.

There's a picture of a 1750 crossfire in C.H. Wendel's Oliver book, but I've never seen or heard of one other than that.

The 1600 heads seemed to have a touch better ports, I've put a 283/310 crossfire intake valve in a couple of them. Yes, you have to plug a couple water jacket holes in the back of the head. The cam drops right in, same gear, same lifters.

been there done that most horse i got was when put in a 320 power unit , i did put bigger intake valves and ported head, added maybe 5 horse diesels are hard to make power with but make alot of smoke, put a muffler on it and tighten spring up on pump for a few more rpm.s
