Building a puller

I am wanting to put a puller together for Div I Div II 4500 to 5500 lb class I want to be competitive but not go broke doing it My dad and uncle pull Farmall M tractors I grew up on Allis Chalmers so I am kinda partial that way but I am very intrigued by the whole Cockshutt COOP story any advice leads and tips are appreciated

The problem with going division 2 is that many of the division 3 tractors become not competitive and drop down a class to division 2. I would say for around 2500 dollars you could build a good super m engine that would hold 65 hp on the dyno at 540 and be a legal division 1 tractor. Im running 540 cubic inches in mine and have enough for division 3. Baker builds a 436 that is a hard one to beat for half the cost that beat my quite often. Its all what you want to spend but I would say that for the price if I was starting out I would go with a proven 436. When you get 540 or above your over 20 thousand if its built correct and not cobbled together.

Most wc and cockshutt are cheap to build and can run small ci and compete. I have a wc 260 ci that wins in the 5500 div 2. You can spend all the money you want you still have to know what your doing. Power isn't always best

we were luck found a couple DC cases that ran good and a ub Moline with m5 blocks run div. 1 with DC and 2 with Moline have around 4500 invested including paint jobs win some loose some but have a lot of fun no one ever got rich pulling but a lot went broke some times ready the track will get you farther than high dollar hp

I will take more power any time but that dose not mean you are going to win. With speed limits any tractor can win on any given day. It takes reading track and good tires to make the difference. No tire is good on every track so that makes a difference also.

I have been doing alot of reading and it seems I could put a competitive Oliver 77 together for a reasonable amount of money Any thoughts? Also thank you to the guys who have already offered help my dad started pulling with the ms after he retired he does very well lots of trophy and from hearing him talk I think I caught the bug

I am a little late chiming in; but; here goes. I am not familiar with the rules or restrictions on that Div. 1 / 2. (I do not do NATPA). You will be hard pressed to go below 5000#; but a Minneapolis-Moline U or UB will be my suggestion. I do not see anything else out there that will yield as much horsepower per dollar as a "Minnie". If you are allowed factory or M & W overbores; super kits; or power blocks; you can go 336-354ci. I have run this setup regurally in our "super farmstock" classes with 15.5x38 top cut tires thru 7000#. Using the right factory parts; a dyno report of 80-90hp is very realistic. Just depends on the restrictions and if you want to pull that heavy.

A good place to start IMO is antiquetractorpullguide.com. Lots of good info and ideas. Check out (google) Northeast Nebraska Tractor Pullers.
Pick a tractor that you like! With a few exceptions, Most can be tweaked to pull well and compete, and cost varies with area and available services and advice. If you pull with a brand you have a desire for,you will probably have fun.

We run all NATPA rules. Most pulls are around the Carroll area

so if I had a 77 with a 770 overbore at around 55 horse and a turbo what class could i pull in I think this would be a competitive tractor with the right tires and alot of fun

My son and good friend both have MM 445"s. A little head work and some decent tires plus hitch will make for a competitive puller without breaking the bank. It has a good selection of gears with the torque which means you would have twice the gear selection of a M. You wouldn't necessarily have to use the torque, just use it for a high-low gear. Another plus is that model tractor holds it's value quite well.

Thank you guys for all the help I think I have decided to do the 77 run with it and have as much fun as I can and hopefully win a few or at least place in a few along the way

Do you pull with them. I spoke to the pres. today they have pulls within 50 miles of me looks like some tough competition but i think this is the club I will pull with

last year we had 3 in New Market,IA 3 in Emerson IA and 1 in Malverin,Essex,Creston,Griswold, and Tabor, IA

not sure for this year, I think it will be the same as last year I'm gonna try and have one in Bedford, IA and they said something about Grant City, MO

I wish. I just went too all the pulls I just hope we can get more tractors in 4000 to 5000 lbs classes. my super H lacks a little on power, but I go to have a good time and watch my kids yell and cheer for me
