building a pulling tractor

I am wanting to build a pulling tractor that I can pull in a antique class (1958 and older) and in the local farmer classes. I was wondering if you gays had any suggestions or what tractor I should look for. Preferably a john deere but you might be able to persuade me to something else.

Depends what class you want to pull in. I would research the local pulling groups in your area and see what class you want to pull in. I am new and I bought a Super H. In Neb H's and H parts are pretty easy to come by.

About any brand can be fun to make into a puller. I personally have a Moline U and they make good pullers. I would say you can't go wrong if you get any of the following: JD B, A, or G. Farmall H, M, 400, 460, 560 (you will need ChadS magically springs for the H or M!!!) AC WD45 (I am not real familiar with all of the AC's that make good pullers), Moline U, G, GB, 5-Star, Oliver 77, 88. There are more than the models I listed, but these seem to be the most popular. Depends on what weight class you want to pull and your brand perference. Just decide those two things and start the addiction.

AC WC makes a light tractor that you can get an E gleaner engine into to get hp...WD and WD-45 are the best to put motors in and still weigh light, around 4,500

We have 2 Moline 445's we pull. Ours and uncle Earls. We pull them mostly in the 4000#-6500# classes. They usually do pretty well. One thing these tractors have is the hy-lo trans which gives us a gear that works on any track. We don't shift gears when we pull but depend on gear selection to match track conditions. Our Ford 600 has the over-under-direct and we can do the same with it. We pull div-2 and before we sold the WC Allis we had it was tough to find just the right gear. To high a gear and you'd run out of snott at the end. To low a gear a you might power out to soon and burn off the tires. With the Ford or Moline you could grab that inbetween gear. You could buy a 445 with decent compression and do a little head and carberator work, tweek the govener, and for less than $800 extra make it compeditive in most areas.

No gays here, but if you're on a budget, a late model A or B works good for the Deere side. Geared low, so you don't need tons of power. Takes more skill, and luck, but can work.

If want to do it for fun by a JD, if you want to win get a 6 cyl. 460,560 IH, Case 600,900, or any of the big Molines. You can come across alot of tractor missing part, etc. I would find something like that to make a puller out of rather than tearing up a restorable tractor, especially if it's kinda rare. Later...

If you don't mind pulling heavy a JD 60 will do a good job, I't will be slow but it will be fun. with a good tune up on a stock one you'll not run out of power very often and every now and then you'll hurt them bigger motors feelings.

it just depends on the class you want to pull. i pull with OTTPA here in North Carolina with a 900 Ford. with 38" tires they are almost impossible to beat in 4200 thru 5700 pounds. They have 45 horsepower stock and also turn 2450 rpms stock.
