bush hog oil

Hi guys- need some advise here. Can I use regular SAE 80-90 wt. gear oil to change out the fluid in my bush hog, or do I need to use the EP oil? Does it build up that much pressure for EP oil? Thanks for any tips.

Steve:

EP 90W or 140W is appropriate for your bush hog gear box. Some gearboxes have air vents to prevent pressure differenials. You can simply leave the filler cap a bit loose if yours does not.

If you have minor seal leaks you may wish to try CNH EP grease. It is much thicker than 140W but pourable. It is available in quart bottles. Your dealer may need to order it.

IIRC, "EP" refers to the ability of the oil to lube the gears under high load conditions, NOT to the "pressure" in the gearbox.

As long as there or no "brass parts" in the gearbox, the "EP" oil should be a better choice.

SAE 80-90 gear oil is just fine. YOu can use any of the grades commonly available. GL-1 thru GL-5. I use GL-5 (which is a EP oil) both in the tractor tranny (per the IT-FO-4 shop manual, page 12) and the brush-hog.
