bush hog setup on a TO-20

What is the correct distance between the lift
arm pins and the pin for the top link for a
bush hog (slasher) to be used on a TO-20. I'm
looking at a 4 foot Danco and the way it is setup
now that distance is over 29 inches. It just looks strange and I want to shorten it but don't
know how far to go.

I grew up sitting on a to20 and a 5ft ford bushhog. I think it is a 5 ft one anyway, it goes to the outside edge of the tires track wise.Dad still has it, but it is 90 miles from here right now. we cleared a lot of land with it since the 70s and it is still going strong. Well as for your question, I am not totally sure exactly what you mean, but I do know they make several different length top links. I just put a 5ft bushhog on a Farmall M with a 3 point (has ferguson lower arms on it) and had to go with a short top link. Works ok, but it smashed my PTO sheild some. I got 3 top links before I got it where it would work ok.

Doug, what length of a toplink are you using? Is it adjustable? The most common ones for these tractors with bush hogs is 18 inches. The way I set mine up is to put the bush hog on the three point lift, lower it until the deck is at the proper height for mowing, then adjust the toplink until it is not putting pressure up or down on the implement or tractor. The toplink should not be a weight bearing member when the implement is in use, but rather should help maintain the proper angle between the front of the implement and the ground. This is just how I do it, it works well for me.

Thanks for your response, the 18 inches vertical height between the lift arms and top link is what I needed to know. My top link is adjustable but the point for it to attach to the bush hog is 28+ inches above the lift arm pins. Someone modified it from origional but I have plenty of
room to drill new holes for the top link at the correct height

I just measured my brush hog. It has 24" and 27" mounting holes from vertical from the lower connecting arms and where the top link goes to the tractor. I believe this was to fit a variety of tractors. That 18" is the top link length. The top link just has to adjusted to mow level. So your vertical height is about normal. If the vertical top link height mounting point on your mower is too low then the rear of the mower will not lift very high for transport.
If your mower works OK and lifts OK now then the top link angle is doing it's job.

I just got a 5 foot king kutter for mine. Will have plenty of power to drive the bigger size and yoiu will get a lot more done. I just use the same cheap Chinese adjustable top link for my 5 foot finish mower and 7 foot blade for snow. I too had some problems with the pto shield getting eaten up and I had to mount the pto shaft backwards on my finish mower for clearance sake. Works fine otherwise now for some 10 years.
