Busted up starter. Its NEW too!

Just bought a "6volt/12volt" starter from link_disallowed three weeks ago for my newly rebuilt 1956 mf50 with cont z134 motor. Worked probably 4 or 5 times. last night cranked it up and noticed the starter didn't sound just right. It did crank the engine up and it ran fine. Tried to shut down and restart and starter wouldn't turn and the starter was smoking. Took it off the tractor and found that the starter gear teeth were shredded and the nosecone housing was split in half!
Stevens called the manufacturer and they said that starter was not meant for twelve volt systems. Yet Stevens advertises it for 6 or 12 volt systems and they are trying to give me the run around on replacing it. Anyone know Kevin at Stevens or anyone else? I thought they would have taken care of this no questions asked since I just bought it three weeks ago!

there is no such thing as a 6V12V starter it's ether 6 or 12 but not both and your 50 is 12. sure you can run a 6 volt with 12 but you can and will bust starters

I have a 6V starter running on a 12 V system since I bought my TO-30 in 1994 and have had no problems with it. The previous owner installed a 12v alternator and changed the system voltage sometime before I bought it. My tractor is a working machine on our ranch and in use regularly.

Make sure when you get the starter that it has the thrust washer where thearmature goes into the nose piece. Many times they are left off and this can cause the nose piece to crack.

The starter gear teeth on the starter should be harder then the hinges of hades and should not be "shreded". It is possible for the ring gear on the flywheel to be excessively worn however.
