C starter grinding

I have a C which would grind the starter about half the time at first, now it does it almost every time. The starter gear is in good shape, the ring gear looked okay on a cursory inspection but I did not check it carefully. I have two working starters and both do the same thing. When I push the starter rod it either engages and sounds happy or it grinds, almost like the gear is not moving out all the way and is grinding against the side of the ring gear. Any advice on what to do next would be much appreciated.

We have a C that does that also. I have found that is I turn the engine over say a 1/4 turn it does not do that which in my case is caused by a ruff area on the ring gear. I bet it you look it over real good you will find that one small area of the ring gear has burrs on it that you maybe able to clean up with a file

I would check, like old says. I would also try replacing the solenoid, and lubing the starter. Sometimes the solenoid hangs due to low voltage, and also sometimes when the drive is dry.

The C if set up as it should be has no solenoid but has a saddle switch on the starter which has a foot pedal rod you push with your foot the start it

You will have to split the tractor and change or flip the ring gear over. I would guess if you compare the old bendix gear with a new one it won't look as good as you think now. Biggest cause of a bad ring gear is a bad bendix that does not cause the gears to mesh correctly. I had a fellow bring a starter out of a B and want an new bendix put on it. It didn't have the correct teeth count. He said he had a new bendix put on and it never seemed to work right. He said that the one that was on his starter (looked just like the first one) He didn't count the teeth.
Same thing has happened the other way when a ring gear was installed with the wrong tooth count. They (looked) the same but different tooth count.
All in the (details)
You will not be able to check it out correctly looking thru a little hole.

Remove tapered mounting stud.If starter will push in-remove & weld nose stud hole full.Replace & mark where hole needs to be.Drill new hole in cone with bit ground to make tapered hole.

Forgot- Remove spark plugs&turn engine by hand while holding starter in to be sure starter gear clears ring gear. Use soft ni- rod to weld hole full . Keep cool enough to touch. ni-rod available in small packages at TSC. Make tapered hole with ground drill bit or tapered reamer or carbide burr in air die grinder. Dealer did this to our 49 B over 60 years ago. still works good.
