we have a 41 H that we recentlty tore down for a rebuild everything went back together fine and it ran fine when it went back together except the belt pulley now rubs on the sheild behind it rubs more in an up and down fashion more than an in and out we replaced the cam bearings the left 1 was really bad so we replaced them all except the ones in the pulley itself it seems fine but i didn't take it out im only checking for play in the pulley the bushing seems fine but i don't know what the measurements on it would be my local dealer doesn't have a service manual on it and we are going off a i&t manual not the greatest i have had other 2cyl JDs apart but this is our first H please help with any thoughts on what to check

Could be a bad bearing either in the camshaft itself, left bearing controls endplay, or in the clutch itself. Also, if the clutch disc goes on the camshaft too far due to loose splines, could be the problem. Should be no appreciable end play or up and down play in the belt pulley when the clutch is engaged. Just going to take it apart and see. Did it do that before you started working on it?

I"m no H specialists but my I&T read 5-10 thousandths on the crank end-play. Should not be ANY Up-Down movement. Sounds like a bearing to me.

To the first fella that responded the clutch on a JD h runs on the cam so there is no need to check crank end play and to the other fella no the problem only started since we reassembled it the rubing is on that thin shield behind the pulley but more on the small section that kinda sticks under the pulley when its slid all the way on if that makes sense to anyone thats why i said it looks like the rubbing is up and down also when it was running we tried to engage the clutch and it almost stalled the tractor

The shield needs to be centered on the shaft. The new cam bearings changed the position of the shaft and now allows the pulley to rub on the shield. The best way to fix this is to snug the shield bolts up just enough that it will move by tapping with a hammer. Reinstall the pulley and tap the shield with the hammer until it doesn"t rub. Then remove the pulley and tighten the bolts. Hope this helps. This can be a very agrivating process!

Pull off the belt pulley and loosen the bolts that hold that shield in place. Temporaly slide the pulley back on and then use a soft hammer and tap the shield various ways as you turn the pulley ( by hand ) and you can hear when it is centered and not rubbing. Carefully slide the pulley off as not to disturb the shield and then tighten and lock wire the bolts. Should be good to go.

I must have listened to my granddad as I did the same thing as described above on my H. I made sure it spun with no interference before having it all back together. I had to remove mine to clean and paint behind it as well as install the foot pedal lever.

Looks like he and I were think the same thing at the same time.Only a few minutes apart. LOL He likely types faster !
