MR.Schweibert--can you give me any advice about replacing a oil seal on a 1955 load & depth shaft? It"s only leaking from the right side. Can the seal be replaced without pulling the shaft? What precautions do I need to take to do it right? I have a 1955 service manual.

It is a Cat 3 hitch with the external hydraulic cylinders. I measured the length of the shaft. It is about 27" long. The distance between the left side of the tractor where the shaft comes out and the inside of the left wheel hub is about the same, but the shaft would have to be rotated a little and angled up to get it out. I worry about damaging the left side seal by removing the shaft. I also wonder why the right seal failed--just the seal or a worn shaft. How much $ is a shaft?

If you are talking about the shaft that the lower 3 point arms mount to, it is not a bad job to replace on a cat. 3. There is a large nut on the right side that holds the mounting point for the 3pt arm, after removing the nut remove the mount. The shaft will pull out the left side. You will need to drain the rear end and it holds about 13 gallons of 90 weight. Both seals should be replaced or you will be repairing the other side next week. Also a check the condition of your bearings. If you have the weels out wide enough it will be a plus. Remove the preload on your draft springs and it will be alot easier to remove/reinstall the pings holding the 3pt arms on. Good luck, hope this helps, Stu.
