Camera Question

Hello,
I need to get a decent quality SLR camera.
I have looked at a Nikon and a Canon,
I'm leaning towards the Nikon.
The model is D3000, and it is $479.00
Comes with a 18 to 85mm lens.
Any of you has one of these.
Are there any other camera of similar price and quality that I can look at!
I got a week before graduation.

Never had a Nikon, film or digital, that I cared for. My Canon AE-1, though, is still going strong since 1978.

I'll never buy another Nikon.

A friend went through this a few years ago, I think he bought the Canon. His comment on it was that one did everything in the lens, the other did everything in the body so with one the lenses were cheaper but if the autofocuser broke the body needed repair as opposed to buying a new lens. Its been several years now and I can't remember which is which.

In the end I'd say go to a camera shop and try both, buy the one that feels better in your hands, you'll never be happy with the other one.

I have a Cannon AT-1 I bought new in '78 or '79, have a few lens for it. I haven't used it for many years. Is there any market for it?

I have the Canon 30D and like it. I used to have an A1 for many years, so the transition was simpler. The Canons have the image stabilizer in the lens and Nikons are in the body, so the Canon stabilized lenses are more expensive than the Nikons. As far as I know Nikons are just as good as the Canons. There are a lot of really good amatuer photographers in my company that compete in our monthly photo contest, and there are more Nikon photos than Canon. I"m still a fan of Canon only because I"ve owned them so long.

I have a Minolta SLR film camera i bought in 1969
It is the SRT 101 model with a few lenses as well.
I don't know what your camera is worth.
Mine Minolta had been my work horse untill the digital age. I am ready for a digital SLR.

I was looking at the Nikon and I liked the balance and the 3" screen.
The Canon is also a good camera.
It has to happen the weekend (THE CAMERA). Graduation is Wednesday, so I need to get one, and learn all the buttons!.

Canon is the choice of must responders.
I'll have to take another look. There maybe a model im my price range.
I also like to get a 300mm lense with it though.

If you like Minolta then check out Sony (bought them out) Just bought A560 body and a Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 I needed to stop action inside a gym and Sony can fire off 7fps blew friends Nikon D3100 out of the water, course set me back 1100.00 but you probably know that the quality of lens is what makes the picture, lens was almost half the cost but hey has a 6 year warranty. Sony (Minolta) has some cameras in A300 range very similarly priced to what your were looking at, drops back to around 3fps which is good for most uses, HTH

I have the Nikon D5000 and love it. Still learning how to get the most out of it but so far it is handy with the two lens, 18mm to 55mm, and 55mm to 200mm.

The feel and balance of the camera is very important, especially when you"re shooting in odd positions,low light conditions, or long zoom, even with image stabilization.

Have you considered a high end point-and-shoot instead of a SLR? Bought a Fuji Finepix S8100 a couple of years ago and love it; has a 4.7--84 mm built-in lens. Can't remember, but I think it was about 200 bucks when I bought it. I take thousands of pics per year ('official' photographer for family and church), but can't say I know much about cameras..........

Look at the rebel line in the canon line for a lower price. Also maybe get an a all in one lens.
I've got the Tamron 18-270 with stablization lens and love it when shooting sports and I don't lose those close ups. I set my 7D on aperture setting and chose the aperture setting and start shooting. I have had really good results doing this. Also if using flash you can set it on program, which is a somewhat automatic setting, but here you can change your iso setting. When I'am in a hurry this works well.

No not really, I dont need a professional camera, but i like to get and SLR with a couple of lenses. That Fuji finepix sounds like a work horse. With 84mm you can take nice portait shots.

Nice shot, the focus is pretty good foreground and background, even though the light was not ideal for the shot. I don't mean that in a bad way. It is a very good shot.

I'm so confortable with the Minolta, as I have used the camera for years.
The digital Minolta's are not the same. Here is a picture of 2 of them. The maxxum has a bad lens ring. The dimage7 lost the procesing of the picture itself. The dimage7 has the new sd cards
slots, but not worth the repair.
2 paper weights now.

Wife has a canon EOS350D. Can't remember what it cost but she has a couple of lenses she uses and takes some pretty good pics. dummy proof enough that I can use it also.....

I will have to look a a Canon. I liked the Nikon because it was very easy to hold, and point.
But the Canon maybe my choice. I hope to get something this weekend. The graduation will be this Wednesday, and I want to get a little practice.

Just want to thank you all for the input. I did not get out to-day.I have the next few days all to myself, and I should get a chance to get A camera. I'm going to use a dvd video camera because I need to record the speech of my grandson. I can get still pictures from the video as well. He graduated as the valedictorian of his graduating class, so that is the reason why I wanted a good digital camera as well.
My Minolta system can get a good picture in also.
I have 270MM and at 20 to 30 Ft, ( my seating )
I can get some good stil pictures also.
Digital pictures are much easyer to edit.
