carb leaking

My carb was leaking on the 8n so I took it off to check the float and needle/seat. I found out the throttle shaft seal wasn't even in its rightful place. After looking it over, the shaft has a lot of up and down play in it. The hole it goes thru is egg shaped and it couldn't have made a good seal. I read that you can put a bushing in it to take out the slop. Do I have to drill it out to accept the bushing or does it just slide into the hole before the seal? This site doesn't have the bushing. Can I buy it locally along with a complex carb rebuild kit. I was thinking napa would have this stuff. This may have been my hard starting and missing problem all along! What do you think?

db454.......unless they started making bushings that are "egg-shaped", yer gonna haffta "drill" yer lopp-sided carb throttle shaft hole the same dimension as the bushing. ........sheesh!!!

As to where to get a bushing, probably nnalert is yer best bet as carb bushings are NOT standard rebuild kit parts. (can you guess why???) .......the amazed Dell

After looking at the bushing at just 8ns, I think it goes in the 3/8 hole where the seal goes. I will findout from them if it does need to be drilled out or pressed in where the seal is. The hole is stepped down from 3/8 to 1/4. Just the 1/4 hole is egg shaped. Maybe I can find me a bushing that is egg shaped to fit!!!Lol

I've installed a couple of those bushings on Farmall H carburetors. The bushing is the same as used on the 8n carbs. The old bushing has to be completely removed. Drill it or whatever, but don't go too far and get into the carb body. The new bushing is then installed by pressing it in, or gently tapping with a small hammer, but after it is in there, the new bushing needs to reamed out for a perfect fit to a NEW throttle shaft.

Rustyfarmall, thanks for the info. After you install the bushing in it, is there enough room for the shaft seal in behind it? Doesn't look like there would be enough room for all that. I will get the bushing and do some measuring.

Done a bunch of'em nuttin to it... The one you want is 5/16 O.D. 1/4" I.D... You drill it all the way... I free hand it and sometimes get a tad off so have to keep work'n on the I.D. till the shaft does not bind... They all need reamed, I have a reamer but prefer a 1/4" drill bit that I ground a lone tapper on so I can align it to the other side...

I ground the heads down on a few different length 1/4" bolts and use them to drive the bushing in... The bushing goes all the way in but not so far the throttle plate will interfere then you can install the OEM seal... Theirs no reason to have to trim the bushing  are any-other shad-tree twink'n...

Just for you they also make a 3/8" bushing,, it works also... I prefer the 5/16" one...
