Carbon remover???

Any suggestions regarding what chemical(spray or brush on) to use removing carbon from aluminum combustion chamber (head, piston, etc)The head is off.

i use a scraper made out of a peice of plastic.didnt say what engine you have. but some of the new stihl engines require decarboning every year and stihl dealers now have a product for that.over cleaner was brought up,and it does disolve carbon,but is hard on aluminum.ive used spray carb cleaner to loosen up carbon. there was a long discussion at perr.com forum last week,you may want to look at it.kohler had tuneup kits for the kseries engines,it came with points,cnd,plug and head gasket so you could remove the head and clean the carbon off. lucas

Put the motor back together. Pull the muffler and the air cleaner. Run it full throttle and use a spray bottle to spray water into the carb when it's running. The water turns to steam and poof.

GM dealers market Top Engine Cleaner,
Schaler's makes Karb Out, SeaFoam dissolves Carbon, these are solvents, add to gas, or spray into intake of running engine. I also agree plain water works too. I remember a mechanic telling me " Put in new plugs, and drive it fast in the rain. "

I got to ask;Why remove the muffler?Also,is it a good idea to run anything(4 or 2 stroke)wide open without a muffler?Not questioning your answer here,just wanted to know your reasoning.Dude11

I take the muffler off so all that nasty goo doesn't go into the muffler.

I work in the marine field for a living and we deal with carbon ever day. BRP owners of Johnson and Evinrude outboards. They build a product called Engine Tuner. It"s about the best thing built. Spray down carb at about 1/2 throttle leave sit 2hr min. to 24 hrs. max. then run under hard load till it"s out of system. They also make a product called Carbon gaurd to add to the gas tank that works good to help pervent carbon. Have a good day

WD40 works good on carbon,you can use it to soften the carbon before scraping or scrape first,spray it with WD then wipe the rest out with a rag.
