carburetor trouble

have a '49 8N. Just rebuild the carburetor. Runs great idling, but when I start to plow, it dies. The shop manual carburetor diagram has 3 adjustment screws, but my carburetor only has 2.

Well either your missing some part, or its not the correct carb. It should have an idle stop on the throttle rod area, an idle screw close to the top or the carb and a main jet that sits at a 45 degree angle

Sounds like you main jet is either plugged or not set correct. Or your float level is to low or you are not getting enough flow of fuel from the tank. You need to check all these to see which it is or maybe a combination of some or all of them. Pull the fuel filter off and check that the tank is open they often plug up right there and don't let enough fuel though to run wide open.

Walt, my 8n has no fuel filter.But what about the 3rd set screw on the carb?

I have a few of those older tractors and have had a similar problem on every one. In my situations you can mess with the carb all I wanted to but it ended up being the rust in the gas tank. And it did not matter how many inline fuel filters I put in, the tractors would not run good until I took the tank off and coated the inside with Red Kote. The exception was on my JD 60 when I sent my carb into a place in Missouri, I think it was called Sharps, and they rebuilt and cleaned out all of those orifices in the duplex carb, best $100 I ever spent, that tractor still fires up in one or two cranks after two years.
