Case 1194 shifting problem

I have an 83 model Case 1194. Today I was mowing hay and when I went to shift from 2nd into reverse it slipped into 3rd and there it remains! It's the shifter on the right side, 3 forward and one reverse. On the left I have two shifters with two speeds each. I have been having problems shifting prior to the lock-up. Can anyone tell me what to look for? I have the service manual as well as the parts book.
 
Its usually in the shifter where it goes into the top of the transmission. Not uncommon on the xx90 and xx94 series tractors with the DB transmission. I dont know why they do it, my theory is that since the origional design was for the shifter to be top mounted the linkage just isnt quite what its supposed to be. Pull the shifter linkage off the top of the transmission, manually put in neutral and put it back together. The one I used to have did it about once a year.
 
Our 1190 had a pin fall out on the shifter on the right side.This pin was about 5/16" x 1 1/4" and a press fit.I made a new pin slightly bigger and its been fine for many years. Nick
 
Thanks Nick and kyhayman! Both your answers are correct. I removed the shifter assembly, aligned into neutral and it is working. It also needs the rollpin replaced as there is quite a bit of slack between the shifter and the rod assembly.

I just figured this out today on mine. Seems it is not all that unusual and takes about 5 minutes to fix. Remove the four bolts holding the offset shifter support plate from just in fron of the seat on the body. 1/2 deep socket will do. Lift straight up and off and set aside. You will notice a rod that extends down into the gear case with a ball end on it. That sits in the split saddle shift connection. What you SHOULD see if all it normal is (when in neutral) the split saddle sits together and centered. What seems to happen is they get stuck in the misaligned position and will not shift. Take a very clean metal rod or tire iron and place it against one side of the split saddle and move it forwards or backwards. Once thats free move the other so that the two sides are aligned. In this position you will be in neutral and able to start the tractor (I think this might just be 90s+) and if they seem to move without a small sledge nudging themjust a little elbow greasethey will be fine. Line them up together to form one oval cup. Replace the plate and four bolts..make sure they are tight but not permanentyou will need to do this again at least every once in a while. Make sure the ball end of the rod is in the cup. When tight the shifter should move easily side to side. Start the tractor and shift gears. You should notice a much improved positive movement into gear. When your gears start feeling wonky or oddly tight.do this again. Each time line up the split saddle. While youre in there shift your hi/low rod and PTO speed shift to make sure everything lines up and moves smoothly and visibly. If youre like me, tomorrow youre out cutting hay!
 
I got this problem on my Case 1690 with synchronized gearbox, not hydrashift, today.
It is the second gear that is in, and I can not get it out. The tractor works. I can drive with gear number 2 and everything else works, but I can not shift gears.

What makes this problem?

I do not understand your explanations. Why is it able to shift if you remove the top shifter?
If the other one is in wrong position, should not two gears be in then? Or can it be in a somewhere in between position?
