Case 1845C Trouble

Trouble started when picking stones, the engine died almost like when you snub it. Tried to restart, engine would turn over but would not fire. I let it sit for about an hour and it restarted, I moved it up to the shed and changed the fuel filter; tried to restart and same problem. I let it sit overnight, and it restarted without any problems so I just left it run for about 30 minutes and then I moved the throttle and the engine died. I thought it might be the ignition swith so I installed a new one. I used it yesterday to pick some more stones and the same problem started, engine dies, leave it sit for a couple of minutes and it restarts and run long enough to get back to the shed, then move the throttle forward and the engine dies. I then installed another fuel filter and bled, the transfer pump is working without any problems, got it restarted and left it run for an hour, then move the throttle and engine dies. Has anyone else had a similar problem? Any suggestions on what to look for next? Thanks Ken

I cant say I've ever had this particular problem but if I had to guess I'd guess its an obstruction of some type in the fuel line or fuel tank. Sand, grit, plastic prills from using 5 gallon hydraulic pails for fuel cans, etc. Something blocking part of the flow but not all of it. The other guess I'd have would be an electrical fault. My dozer has done this more than once. Something grounds out and shuts off the pump.

Did you cut open the filter to see if there was anything in the filter?

A friend got his back from the dealer and it did the same thing yours did. It ended up being that for whatever reason, they shut off the fuel valve at the bottom of the fuel tank and neglected to turn it back on. It would draw enough through to run for a few minutes and then quit- wait and it would restart. Opened the valve and all was well again. Next time it quits, take the fuel filter off and see if it is full; if not, your supply is restricted somehow.

With all suspected fuel trouble always start at the outlet from the tank, check that there is a decent flow, that machine sports three different injector pumps and two different feed pumps, what pump have you got a CAV,Bosch inline or a Bosch rotary,in either case check the flow from the tank, check the fuel line up to the feed pump is not drawing air, there could be dirt trapped in the feed pump causing it to malfunction, remove the in and out pipes, get a piece of rubber hose, hold one end to the out of the feed pump and put the other end in your mouth, see if you can blow back,if you can the valves in the pump are leaking, put the pipe to the in side and blow through in the hope you might shift the debries, test it again, put the in pipe on and use the primer and watch what comes through,if not a decent flow with a bit of pressure the pump needs replacing.
