What do you guys know about Case 194 Hydro, 12 HP Kohler. Saw one today (forgot to get the ser#), has hydraulic lift. Thinking I may be able to get it for $300.00 and it runs. Comes with deck and push blade. Looking at posibly making a puller out of it.

No such thing as a 194. You saw 195 most likely.

Terrible choice for a pulling tractor. Move on and find something else like a Cub or a Wheelhorse.

You're right, it's a 195. CRSS sets in all the time. I'm looking possibily of using it for our community tractor garden tractor pulls. I bought a pulling sled for the community for all of our annual activities (fund raising/activity). The local JD and Cub Cadet dealer provides me tractors for people to use if they don't have one. I like the Hydro's because they are kid safe, and this one would be our community tractor. All kids get trophy's no matter how well they do. It's a big hit around here. This 4th of July activities, I have a RC (Radio Controlled 1/16th scale) Club coming in. After that, I foresee a lot of father/son/daughter projects this winter putting together not only garden tractors but RC's.

Stay away from it as a pulling tractor. Not good. Parts are getting hard to find. Its a good tractor for retoration but definitely not a puller.

Since you do not seem to be all that dissuaded, I offer the following.

The 190 and 195 models are notorious for twisting off axle shafts and those shafts are nearly impossible to find as a used part any longer. I don't believe that Eastman/Ingersoll still has any of these shafts sitting in their Maine warehouse or in any of the regional distributors.

The second problem is these tractors do not use a hydrostatic drive system like other GT's have. Case used the patented hydraulic drive they acquired when they purchased Colt Manufacturing in late 64.

No matter how you cut it, a 195 is far from an ideal choice for a pulling tractor and many clubs will not allow any tractors in the stock classes that use a rear wheel diameter larger than 12 inches. The 195 uses a 16 inch rear wheel.

The objection comes from those with GT's that have the smaller rear tires. They believe that larger diameter rear wheels offer an unfair advantage. If you are in process of forming some sort of club, then you better come up with a set of rules right now so that everyone believes that the playing field is level.

I've seen some Wheelhorse hydro tractors do very well in the dead stock pulling class. I urge you to do some serious research prior to selecting a tractor.
